When it comes to fishing gear, don't pinch pennies! It could cost you the fish of a lifetime. Here's why it pays to splurge instead.

Advertisement Have you noticed the mechanic never uses bargain-basement tools when you get your boat, motor, snow machine or tow vehicle serviced? That thought occurred to me the first time I picked up a pair of Knipex cutters and snipped the points off a treblehook adorning the mouth of a monster m...

Still in the hunt for a moose? Here's how to completely outwit a bull into thinking you’re a cow, and lure him into range.

Advertisement Most experienced hunters can usually undermine at least one of a moose’s keen senses long enough for a chance at a clean shot. But how many hunters can trick the combined faculties of hearing, vision, smell and instinctual reaction at the same time? When you can manipulate the overal...

From waterfowl, snipe and cranes to pheasant, grouse and partridge, the Prairie provinces offer wingshooters plenty of action. Ken Bailey runs through the options.

Advertisement Wingshooting is a highly varied and equal-opportunity pastime. It’s pursued by farm boys in rubber boots carrying Grandpa’s single-shot, and by business executives in English tw**d toting $50,000 custom-fitted doubles. Most of us fall between those two extremes, but we all share a ...

To successfully hunt giant white-tailed bucks during daylight hours, you need to search out their forest-bound secret hideouts. Here's how.

Advertisement As darkness slowly lifted, the landscape remained shrouded in heavy mist. A foggy dawn can be ideal for hunting small, secluded openings in otherwise densely forested areas. In fact, my trail cams had revealed at least three different bucks pausing to feed in one such pocket before the...

Don’t put away that tackle just yet! The fall walleye bite can be the hottest of the year—if you know where to look.

Advertisement Even though the days are getting shorter and the temperatures are dropping, the fall is still an excellent time to go after walleye. The fish will be on the move, however, so knowing where they’re going and why is key. It all comes down to water temperature and w**d growth, and how t...

Wondering whether you should set out shells, silhouettes, wind socks or full-body decoys on your next field hunt for waterfowl? We run through the options.

Advertisement When it comes to field decoys for hunting ducks and geese, waterfowlers can choose to use shells, silhouettes, wind socks or full-body decoys. Some hunters use one style exclusively, while others use different types of decoys at different times throughout the year. Some hunters will al...

Thank you Manitoba Wildlife Federation for standing up for anglers and hunters.

Thank you Manitoba Wildlife Federation for standing up for anglers and hunters.

Manitoba Wildlife Federation’s staff and legal team are appearing before the Court of Kings Bench today to request an injunction to end the Bloodvein First Nations Blockade of a provincial highway that has had denied access to public lands for anglers and hunters. The MWF has done everything within our power to have the Premier, the provincial Attorney-General, the RCMP and the federal Minister of Public Safety to uphold the rule of law and keep our public lands accessible for all Manitobans. We are beyond disappointed that the province is choosing to sit on the sidelines and that it now falls on licensed hunters and anglers to take this next step. The MWF believes that all Manitobans should be able to travel on public highways and access our public land without interference.
