[EVENT REVIEW]
We were lucky enough to catch Alok Vaid-Menon's live performance at the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) last week! Here's our recap of the night.
Author: Sam Fisch
Photography: Adrian Vaktor
https://keepmtlweird.com/alok-the-mai/

October 12th 2021 The MAI was bustling the night of Alok’s performances as both shows for the evening were sold out. Between their two published books (“Beyond the Gender Binary” and “Femme in Public”), their online activism to degender fashion and their impressive social media presence, A...

Frisco Lee Music's latest album "Fever Dream Supreme" dropped right after a full moon night of city-wide debauchery and we were lucky enough to get a short interview!

Musical Inspirations:

My diet consisted of Steely Dan, Vulfpeck, Elton John, Leon Russell, Neal Francis, James Brown, Dr. John - all of which I blended in with the sensibilities of Mac DeMarco and The Beatles. Another notable influence would have to be Beck, who never thought twice about trying out new styles and pushing them to the limit. I basically just wanted to finally make the music that I had always enjoyed listening to.

Process:

I didn’t have lyrical context or ideas about how long or lush the songs would become. Initially, they were all going to be video game soundtracks, and I didn’t want them to have any guitar or vocals in them, but that changed after one of the songs seemed to want to become a ballad, so lyrics were added. At that point, I realized I was making an album, so I started to think about lyrics for all the other songs, and that forced me to really shape the form to fit a lyrical style.
After a few months of arranging and composing and recording, I was stubborn enough to take on mixing the whole album. That part took many more months, because I had no experience in that department, but it was a very valuable learning process.

Future direction:

Since restrictions have been lifted, I've started to assemble a team of musicians I’ve worked with before to take the music to the stage and hopefully play some outdoor shows this summer, including a proper album release show sometime soon. In the very near future, I plan on performing a full run-through of the album, live and filmed in studio. There’s also a cinematic music video for “Your Old Teenage Ways” in the works.

Naghmeh and the Southern Shores

It’s a gloomy morning Montreal.
Lucky for us, Naghmeh and the Southern Shores chose today to release this beautiful and inspiring video, quieting the mind and relaxing the spirit.
Recorded at MR-63 Montréal

Merci Jewell for capturing the gorgeous morning
Merci Seth Duin and Kevin Britten for playing the song with me on that sizzling morning.
Et merci MR-63 Montréal for the beautiful space and unforgettable stage.

This video was recorded on a very special day, as I bid farewell to Seth and welcomed Kevin Britten to the band. It was a nostalgic promise to stay connected and thriving through the magic of music. With the passage of time and the new reality we live in, this promise is one we would like to extend to our fans and the music community. Now more than ever, we call upon music to connect us all, across borders and time zones, walls and windows. Time, and memory.

Au plaisir de se retrouver, de jouer de la musique, et recréer des souvenirs mélodiques.

Alexis Castrogiovanni - Someday My Thoughts Will Be Like A Range Of Mountains

Check out Alexis Castrogiovanni's latest music video for "Someday My Thoughts Will Be Like A Range Of Mountains", an intimate display of the profound and transcendental beauty of softness. Her sound, much like the style of her video, is both technical and delicate.

According to Alexis,
"The song is about wanting so badly to be better than we are, wanting to have these perfect days and minds and lives, wanting to finally understand what it means to have a good life, or a meaningful life… it’s that feeling of starving for connection, purpose, a spiritual centre, while always being aware of this huge spoiler: we die at the end"
