I am truly honored and grateful to the organizers for this incredible recognition. While I’ve been blessed to receive several awards this year, each one holds a unique and special place in my heart. This award reaffirms that when you work diligently and stay consistent, people are watching and appreciating your efforts. It's often said that a prophet is not honored in their own land, so receiving this recognition again from my community is especially meaningful to me. Thank you for this honor and for acknowledging my journey!

*University of Ilorin and the Joy of Expelling Students*

*By Olumide Oyekunle*

The University of Ilorin has just expelled some students for exam malpractices and they are so happy to release their images and this is why we all should be concerned.

I remember my time at Unilorin, when I almost took in a small leaflet inside the exam hall because I forgot totally when I was rushing down. It was my friend who saw the leaflet containing jottings at my back pocket right when we were on queue just at the entrance to the exam hall. The malpractices committee wouldn't even care about such issues, no testifiers or defenders. It is the student that faces them to defend himself or herself alone in an atmosphere where you almost certainly know the outcome. What could have been for me? I believe there are cases like that too or even implications etc, for expelled students. Weird.

I think schools should find a better way of dealing with students who commit exam malpractices. The dagger punishment of expulsion is rather inhumane and harsh. There should be better means to correct these anomalies. Rehabilitation of the human mind is what schools should seek to achieve and expulsion should only be wielded when the actions of students can endanger lives and peace on the campus. The law should not be about breaking people, it should be about reforming. We cannot continue to hold on to principles that makes us feel we are self righteous. People can obey out of fear, but they cannot be transformed if we keep them perpetually in fear. We just have to be able to balance justice with humanity so that we don't lose those humans just because of the weight of punishment. Why not make them retake the course, make them go for a community service under supervision of a lecturer, or find a means to make them feel the consequences of their actions. Is the University admin and its Senate always deriving pleasure in seeing students break down in their sights while facing the panel? What is their joy in seeing young people feel hopeless? Have we become slaves to the laws we make? What is even the purpose of the law? If there's no element of grace in the law, we are slaves of the law and the law becomes an instrument of destruction. Where are the lecturers and Professors in the humanities of that school? What is the essence of their scholarship if right there in their premises, they could not become the think-tanks for policy decisions and recommendations? Who are we as a people? Why do we make things hard? I know the panelists expelling students are religious people. If God should visit each and everyone of them with just one malpractice or willful sin at one point in their lives, would they not crumble at God's fearsome judgement? Very sad. I hope the expelled students can find life again and restart without going into depression or su***de. There has to be a change. Sending away 400level student or 500level (at the eve of graduation) is not the best way to treat the future leaders in your care. This is not nurturing, this is not punishment, this is wickedness.
