A few days ago I facilitated a session to help the Team at Waterloo University measure the impact of their activities. The team told me they felt “invigorated,” “enthusiastic” and “curious” at the end of the session. Upon reflection a few key things stood out to me as well:

1. As a facilitator the best feeling is knowing your session design has worked, when you get to witness your clients’ “aha moments” during the session

2. Everyone is in a better mood when there’s food

3. The toughest challenge when measuring impact is getting people to be honest about how they feel now vs. how they felt then

4. And of course the obvious: Data is irrelevant without context and benchmarks

I was honoured to work with this group, and to know that this approach to measuring impact AND meaning will lead to real results in project planning and success related to .

What an amazing and hectic day (and few months of prep)! I was honoured to lead the CCLF Exhibition Launch Event.

A huge thank you to the amazing team of videographers, photographers, A/V team, and of course our gracious host and delivery partner the Malvern Family a resource Centre. Not to mention Col. Hadfield who is as kind a human as he is a revered astronaut/scientist/author/musician! It was a pleasure to support you today!

I hope the entire CCLF team is proud of the work accomplished (I am!) and was happy to see the impact the project has had on kids and families.

Until the next one!

I’ve been offline for a few days and it was spectacular. Sometimes, it’s nice to step back and get your mind right.

Now that I’m back on the grind I’m thinking seriously about my next lead magnet.

I’ve created many that were successful, but I need to refine since I’m once again refocusing my business and my core offering.

If you’re in a business looking to generate leads for your service, reach out and let’s talk strategy for your own lead magnet.

For all content club members you’ll be getting these correct dates to your inbox!

These days help business owners plan their content for the month fast. I always remind people, don’t just post arbitrarily because you have these dates, remember to relate them back to your business.

That’s how you can make any significant day or milestone resonate with your core audience.

Reach out if you need that support or want to talk about your strategy.

It’s funny how many of these seem like common sense, and yet I see so many small businesses especially neglect to do them.

📌You should be boosting your online presence as much as you can, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

✨But what it does is build your legitimacy.

People will Google your brand. And you want to be in complete control about what they find when they look you up.

📌The best way to do that is to create great content and publish in as many legitimate channels as you can.

Like if there’s one thing on your list you haven’t done yet, but will do!

I keep seeing Job postings where companies want one person to do communications, marketing and sales.

Likely they don’t know the difference. And that’s okay. Here’s a cheat sheet.

So many contractors say they do all of these things, and maybe they do.

But you should take the time to really understand what they do well and what their experience is actually in. They aren’t the same discipline at all. Both valuable in their own ways.

Reach out if you’re not quite sure what you need for your business.

Age discrimination is real.

I’ve been in meetings with people who I know have less applicable experience than I do have actually said to me, “well you were born last week,” to discredit my abilities.

Inappropriate.

Just last week someone asked my age and told me they knew I would end my business and re-join the corporate 9-5 because I’m so young.

I’m 33. I have a masters and 13 years experience doing what I do.

Behaviour like this needs to stop. Some of you may be do it unconsciously. But you’ve got to be aware of it.

Women should be supporting women and boosting each other up.

When I ask new clients about their content strategy, I quickly realize they haven’t put enough thought into building their plan. And that’s okay, that’s my job!

Here are some key elements to remember!

✨Inclusive language avoids using words, expressions or assumptions that would unnecessarily exclude people.

📌Think about the power your words have to impact perception and to reinforce biases.

📌Think about how your phrasing could impact someone from a specific racialized group, cultural background, language barriers, gender identities (and many more...)

Keeping up with inclusive language can sometimes feel like a constant struggle...

These are such simple tips to help boost your visibility on social and help more of your ideal audience to come directly to you.

Hands up 🙌🏾 if you’ll take that extra time today, right now, to update your bio if it needs it!

Audiences retain emotions and stories better than facts and figures.

So to get your audience interested in what you have to say tell them a story!

📌On social media no one has time to read a novel so make it as quick as you can. But still include emotional arcs. Appeal to their emotions. An emotional arc is the basic boy gets girl (happy), boy loses girl (despair), boy gets girl back after struggle and they live happily ever after.

Hard to take people on a journey in just a few characters but that’s the art form!

📌A story needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end. Don’t forget the linear narrative it’s important.

📌Make sure your image connects to your story or at least inspires a feeling when your audience sees it.

Someone asked me recently why I always say “equity” and not equality, and it dawned on me that perhaps the nature of equity needed further examination and explanation. So I’m sharing it here as well.

We are all different, and that’s okay. But differences need to be recognized in order to work towards creating a system of fairness.

(This is why I have problems when people say “oh I’m colour blind”, it’s dismissive. But more on that later).

Language is extremely important, so I’ll be sharing more of these to help businesses be more inclusive in their communications and ultimately their actions.

Share if this was a learning for you, or if there is someone you think would benefit from better understanding this distinction.

has always been important to me given my background in gender equality and the status of women. But ever since I had my little girl I’ve been really thinking about what it means to be a woman and what example I want to set for her.

I had SO many strong examples in my life, women who were breaking barriers in their lives (and subsequently creating pathways for me), women who would stand up and say what needed to be said despite the consequences, women who were bending over backwards to create prospering families and contribute to change and innovation in the workplace.

I often think, am I doing this for my little girl? Am I an example of a woman she can emulate. I try each day to be. But I am, and we are so fortunate to have so many that came before us.

So, today and everyday I’d like to recognize the women in my life who are still doing it and who are inspiring me daily. I SEE YOU LADIES, I SEE YOU!!

This is a short list and I know there are SO MANY more I’m failing to name here...

Happy Sunday! I’ve been thinking a lot about trust and leading to , partnerships and community building for your business.

A sure way to build trust is by ensuring you’re in your content and communications, and yet something that is so simple many businesses struggle to do.

Partly because their brand voice isn’t clear or they don’t take the time to make organic content.

But it’s really important because your customers and clients can smell an insincere business a mile away.

Tell me, are there other ways you show up authentically.

Successful social strategies (in fact all strategies) also have evaluation and measurement built in.

When clients trust your skills they give you room to execute your genius. When you get to work in your genius zone, it ensures your work is more robust for your client. In that way building trust benefits you and your client. So how do you establish trust in your skills?

I love to talk about the things I’m doing broadly beyond typical client work as well as it builds legitimacy and exclusivity in my services. Additionally, when I first start working with a client I always ask them what their elevator pitch is. If they were in an elevator with someone who could make their dream business a reality, what would they say?

I love it when clients don’t know how to describe their business quickly and succinctly, it helps me prove my value early in a project. It helps me establish trust.

Drop a comment and tell me, how do you establish trust in your business?

Tips for better virtual presentations

So I don’t know if you’re like me and you’re giving a ton more virtual presentations.

They are hard right?

You have a bunch of people that have their video off so they don’t have to show their faces or engage with you. Meaning, YOU CAN’T FEED OFF THEIR ENERGY.

And if you’re like me, I like some slides for people to look at just so they aren’t staring at my face for 45 minutes straight.

But how do you know if people are engaged? I have a talk where I could tell from the lack of questions that the crew was just not tapped in. (More in this later). But generally here are my rules of thumb for virtual presentations.

Let me know if any of this is helpful to you:

1) write for your audience, be relatable to them and their experience

2) avoid complexities, too many large numbers, too many big words, people can't remember them and will waste time trying to decipher what you're saying.

3) Your message should be clear and it would help if it's conversational, especially because you're giving a virtual presentation. People want to feel like you're talking to them directly, and that they are engaged with you.

4) Be mindful of your length, no one wants to be talked at for over an hour. Find a way to share engaging information, and then make it interactive, get them voting on something, raising their hands, or responding in some way. But that means your actual speech or presentation may need to be shorter.

5) Use rhetorical devices! For those of you who aren't copywriters like me and don't know what these are, I'm sure you use them often in your writing but don't even thinking about it. These are things like using triads, creating imagery by using opposites or being very descriptive by using metaphors and analogies.

Comment below if you’ll use these tips for your next zoom presentation!

I’m working on a training session for a client whose organization is terrified of social media.

There have been attacks and missteps in the past. But in an effort to protect themselves by not using social media, they’ve inadvertently made themselves more vulnerable.

✨We can’t control what people do on social media, but we can control and contribute to our own positive narratives. And not using social media is a huge misstep and missed opportunity to connect with people where they are already most active.✨

Okay, today’s rant is over. Like if you agree!!!

This isn’t my usual post, but I’m doing a lot of work in this field and it’s important that other communicators, marketers, content creators understand the barriers, the challenges, the opportunities for change surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism. I do a lot of speaking in this area and I’ve been engaged over the past few months in planning a summit on March 22&23 to empower people especially in this industry. I keep hearing consultants and “gurus” tell people they don’t need a website to start a business. And they aren’t wrong... technically. But WEBSITES SHOW LEGITIMACY!

A website is where people go to find out more about you. Sure you may have a curated Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn presence, but a website is all about your brand, your values, your services, and how you PROVIDE value.

A website is the best place to demonstrate you are needed and also one of the best sales tools you will ever have.

There is no reason to not spend your time and energy on a website. And I’m not even saying you have to spend $10k to have one developed for you. But I am saying as a small business owner you should explore tools like Wordpress/wix/square space that provide ready-made options and templates.

It doesn’t have to be complex but it must have a strong message. If you need help with this, message me.

We did a 75th birthday zoom for my father last night. And I really started to think about why it was so successful. Was it that we had this great tool/platform to use? Was it that we had the right occasion? Or was it simply that we were able to make connection?

We had no organization to it. No formal moderation. No set script or agenda or ceremony.

And people so perfectly came in and out for three whole hours. And it was important and we all felt included and all felt loved. And that was because we felt like we were making a connection.

I say all of this because, sometimes we forget why we’re doing all of this. Why we spend time and money on content. Why we spend money on strategy, subscribe to Photo companies and design platforms.

What we are really looking to do is CONNECT and that’s so much more than the tools we use to do so. It’s about finding THE THINGS that connect us. It’s about finding commonality and leveraging it.

So that’s my lesson for the day folks: Your goal should be to find the commonality that brings us together, find and leverage the thing that’s connects us. That’s both your goal and your strategy.

I hear this so often, “my brand is established, I have a logo, some fonts and colours I use. So, I’m done.”

But building community is not just about your visual identity. It’s about how you engage.

It’s about how consistently you’re providing value, it’s about your interaction, it’s about building relationship.

And doing this requires being thoughtful, purposeful, and strategic about how you communicate - what you say, how and when you say it!

Like if you agree (or disagree).

I hear this so often 1) I have all my needs met I don’t need to create organic content. I don’t need to think about how and through what platform I’m communicating. Or 2) I just didn’t know where to start

Let me just say plainly, the first point is not valid. It’s a missed opportunity to not focus any time/resources on organic content. You’re missing clients and business. PERIODTTT.

The second point is common and understandable. Not everyone is a communicator. And not everyone should be. Hire the help you need to get the job done right, to connect your brand with the right clients that will truly value what you have to say.

Build your credibility. Build your client list. Build your revenue stream.

Someone told me one that it’s better to have two high ticket clients than many smaller ones. And I agree in terms of time management and productivity.

Work smarter they say not harder, and it does seem smarter.

But what you miss out from smaller clients is building trust and legitimacy among a wider audience.

You sharpen and hone your skills doing even the smaller, sometimes easier tasks. So I try and find a balance between accepting large clients, knowing I’ll be devoting 70% of my hours to that work, and a few smaller clients to help refine skills and continually build trust.

For all you entrepreneurs out there, what works for you?
