This was a fun project we worked on at the end of 2023.

Lakefield Youth Unlimited was looking for a t-shirt design that represented Lakefield and also incorporated their brand.

The result was this image which they had printed on grey t-shirts for LYU staff and volunteers.

We love how it looks! What do you think?

When Facebook and Instagram were down on Tuesday, many people were unable to sign in to their accounts, and the apps were not recognizing correct passwords.

If you thought your account had been hacked, or that you'd lost access to your followers, you're not alone. Many users have shared that their hearts sunk when their password wasn't recognized.

It turned out to be an error on Meta's end, and in fact the accounts were secure.

But if you're a small business owner who relies on social media to connect with customers and make an income, you may have had a moment of panic.

The good news is, there are things you can do to keep your social media accounts secure:

1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is a security feature that adds an extra step to the usual process of logging into an account. Instead of just entering your password, you also need to provide a second piece of information, typically a code sent to your phone or generated by a specialized app. You may have come across this feature while logging into online banking or the CRA website. This extra layer of security makes it more difficult for unauthorized users to access your accounts, even if they have your password.

2. Update Passwords Regularly

Regularly update your passwords and avoid using easy to guess information, such as birthdays, a pet's name, or common words. To create a secure password, use a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Longer passwords are typically better, try to use at least 12 characters. Create a unique password for each account, and consider using a password manager for added security.

3. Be Cautious

Be cautious of third-party apps and links. Avoid clicking on suspicious or unsolicited links, especially those from unknown sources. It's crucial to prioritize caution to protect your social media accounts from phishing attempts and malware. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Applications are now open for My Main Street, a $15-million Government of Canada investment, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario to continue to support main street businesses and communities across southern Ontario.

My Main Street is being delivered by the Canadian Urban Institute offering two streams that open for applications on February 22, 2024.

The Business Sustainability stream provides up to $20,000 directly to businesses for productivity enhancements.

The Community Activator stream funds up to $250,000 for high-impact community placemaking projects.

Leave a Positive Review - 5 star reviews boost a business’s reputation, helping them attract future customers and clients. ⭐️

Leave a Comment - Engaging comments not only build a sense of community but also enhance post visibility. Leave some kind words or an emoji in the comments. 💭

Give a Referral - Help spread the word. Have you discovered a new small business that you love? Tell a friend! Maybe they'll love it too. 🗣

Like & Share - Show some love to your favourite small businesses! When they share their latest products or services, give it a like or share. Your engagement not only supports them but also helps boost their post for more visibility. A simple like or share can go a long way! 👍

Subscribe to an Email List - Small business marketing is more than just social media. Support a friend's business by subscribing to their email list, and be the first to know about new products and services! 💌

Send an Encouraging Message - Do you see an entrepreneur that is rocking their small business? Send a quick note to let them know. The holidays can be a stressful and busy time. A few kinds words can truly brighten someone's day. 🫶

There are many ways to support small businesses, not only during the holidays but throughout the year.

One way is to leave a review after you have had a positive experience at a local business.

While it might seem small, 5-star ratings and reviews significantly contribute to boosting a business’s reputation, helping them attract future customers and clients.

I invite you to join me in leaving 5-star reviews for the businesses you love, whether on Google, Facebook, or both!

With 20 days left in 2023, that’s less than 3 reviews per day. Take a moment during the evening, with your morning coffee, or during a lunch break to spread joy to small businesses in your community.

If 50 reviews seem overwhelming, that’s okay — do what you can! A positive review holds more value than you might realize for a small business owner.

If you need help thinking of businesses, over the next few weeks I will share the businesses I have reviewed. It could be a local shop, restaurant, dentist, accountant, veterinarian, anyone!

When posting on social media, it's important to switch up your hashtags regularly.

Using the same hashtags over and over can limit your exposure and reach.

By switching up your hashtags, you are more likely to expand your audience and attract new followers who may not have found your content otherwise.

Try experimenting with different hashtags to see what works best for you.

Today is the day! Lakefield Lakefest gets underway this afternoon at 5 p.m.

We have a great line up of local musicians, crafters, and yummy food from the Lakefield & District Lions Club.

Tickets will be available at the gate, or you can purchase ahead of time at www.lakefieldlakefest.org.

We have shelter in case of rain. Chairs will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own if you like.

Put on your dancing shoes, and stop by the Lakefield Fairgrounds tonight and tomorrow to enjoy the camaraderie of this great community event! We look forward to seeing you soon. 🎶
