Since June 1923 the Toronto Field Naturalists have been advocates for urban green spaces and the wildlife that inhabit them. The group is marking its 100th anniversary this year with a photo exhibit during the city’s Ravine Days in October. Read more about them and their upcoming plans in the full Streeter story (attached).

Climate change may be driving people to protect the environment, but the Toronto Field Naturalists have been involved for a century.

A “significant increase” in reports of sick or injured raccoons and the number of people bitten or scratched has led Toronto Public Health to issue warnings against contact with wild animals in the city. Eighty per cent of those people suffering bites and scratches have had to suffer further through the uncomfortable anti-rabies treatment, involving multiple vaccine doses, to fend off the potentially fatal infection. For tips on how to help protect yourself and your pets, see the full Streeter story.

Residents are warned to avoid contact with raccoons after TPH reported a large increase in people being bitten or scratched.

Further developments re: moving the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place include:
* Architects come out for saving the Science Centre. Joining the opposition to the province’s plans to demolish the Ontario Science Centre are the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario and the Toronto Society of Architects.
* MPP Adil Shamji, whose Don Valley East riding includes the Ontario Science Centre site, is among the voices criticizing rebuilding the Science Centre at Ontario Place.

Activist Floyd Ruskin is proud that restoration has been accomplished in the Don Valley. But the east-end resident finds himself himself continually in demand as an advocate for the restoration and preservation of flora and fauna. The valley and our ravines in Toronto are under constant threat from encroachment by developers and others, Ruskin warns.

From Beaches-Leslieville Streeter
A city committee is urging the existing 18 holes at the par-3 Dentonia Park Golf Course be maintained.
The recommendation came Jan. 11 after city staff reported golfers and local residents would be better served by a nine-hole course at the site near Victoria Park and Danforth Avenues.
