From dealing with solitude as a young international student to managing a neuro health challenge that takes her back to Mexico for Healthcare from time to time, Julieta says staying positive and taking lessons from each challenge has kept her focused on her "why". In this chat, she shares nuggets she gathered from working with immigrants at @isans.ca and throws light on some of the trade-offs that we subconsciously make as we choose to migrate.

Study route used to be the easiest and least competitive route to permanent residency in Canada because there was no cap to the number of study visas issued each year. However, with the introduction of annual study visa cap for the next two years, study route will become as competitive as the federal skilled worker program. Will study visas be issued based on first-come-first-serve basis or will it be a score-ranking process like express entry? That is yet to be seen. Either way, there are pros and cons. For context, IRCC issued about 900,000 study visas in 2023.

Engage in small talks they say, but no one tells you how sensitive people can get when you assume their pronoun, yet in most cases, you can’t ask directly. Have you ever been called out for innocently saying something offensive during a small talk? What’s your go-to small talk topic?

#questionoftheweek #LMIA #canadaworkpermit
We have gotten this question frequently enough to warrant a video. Many people claim they know someone can give you an LMIA. This is a criminal offense. I've heard of experiences of too many foreigners who have paid hefty amounts for LMIA for non-existant jobs, only to come to Canada with a visitor visa to meet the harsh reality of being scammed. This set of people potentially could go out of status and risk any chance of ever becoming a PR in Canada. Be smart and don't fall prey to this fraud.

We agree with @ryanwilliamsmp. With the level of immigrant skilled workers currently in Canada, there’s no reason we should have massive labour shortage in fields like healthcare. Needless bureaucracy is what is crippling our healthcare and other sectors in Canada.
What’s the average price of a home in your city? Homeownership used to be one of the hallmarks of the Canadian dream for many immigrants. A proof of progress in setting root in your new home. But with the current housing market, many immigrants are forced to put this dream on hold. Would you consider relocating to another province/city just because of the cost of housing?

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but I'd like to assure you that no matter what you're going through right now, you'll be fine if you just persevere. When life happens, when a goal that seem so easy for others to achieve seem to elude you, when you're engulfed by the loneliness that comes with being an immigrant, when homesickness threatens to suck the life out of you, when you're in a dilemma that feels like being between the devil and the deep blue sea...breathe, take a break if you have to, cry when you feel like, seek help if it's available...do whatever you can to keep hope alive but NEVER GIVE UP!
We're rooting for you!

Scenario: Mr D dies but before he did, he named his wife as his pension, life insurance and investment beneficiary but willed his properties to his children, executed by his estate. Upon his death, nothing much was left of his pension, and investments. While his children inherited his properties debt-free, his wife inherited his debts including the debt on the properties willed to his children. Almost 50% of his insurance payout was used to clear his debt. His wife had to leave the properties to start renting while trying to think of a long-term accommodation.
The tips on this video is apt. Learn the best way to take care of your loved ones upon your debt with minimal debt, fees and taxes. Life insurance is just a piece of the whole picture.

Are you jealous?
Wait, before you rush to say no, be reassured that jealousy is a natural human feeling and there's absolutely nothing wrong with you if you feel jealous about the life that other immigrants appear to be living yet seem difficult for you to achieve.
"What you do with this feeling is what could be wrong or right, not the feeling in itself. Yes I have been jealous and I am still jealous of other immigrants who seem to be living the Canadian dream but instead of allowing my jealousy make me bitter, it has motivated me," Oyin Ajibola- founder, Immigrant Muse.
Let your jealousy keep you motivated, but not bitter!

Comparison they say is the thief of joy!
In this settlement and integration journey, I've often heard immigrants say: "I know where my mates are", "Ishould have achieved more by now", "Mr A came here after me and he's settled while I'm still struggling", "Ms B got a 6 figure job only 2 months after landing while I'm still doing survival job", "Mrs C has gotten her PR when I've not gotten mine and we came to school together", "if only my wife was as supportive as Mr D's wife", "i can't buy a condo when Mrs E bought a duplex....
I don't know who needs to hear this today, but you have to stop comparing your journey with another's. No two immigrants have the same story. Enjoy your journey, see your growth, be willing to learn, unlearn and relearn. No one came to Canada with a settlement blueprint. You can do exactly what someone else did, yet have completely different results.
Be positive, you will definitely eat the fruit of the land of you don't tire out.
🥂here's to your growth and success!

Yes, you are a dotting parent and deeply adores your child(ren) and will never think of deliberately endangering them. You'll be surprised to know how easy it can be for you to come under scrutiny by social services for bad parenting and most-likely loss your child just because someone who misunderstood a situation chose to call the cops or social services on you.
Learn your right and responsibilities as a parent to avoid or deal with such situations when they come up. If you think this can only happen in the US, check out our next post for a Canadian experience and also resources to learn about being a parent under the Canadian law.
