Afrikair Airlines Brand Identity
OCAD University x Me | 2014
For this project, our objective was to develop a comprehensive and cohesive brand identity program for a low-cost airline, named Afikair, targeting the African market. Afikair is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and focuses on providing affordable and reliable air travel across the African continent.
The brand identity I designed for Afikair was deeply inspired by South Africa’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Central to the identity was the logo, which featured the Springbok, South Africa’s national animal. The Springbok symbolizes agility, strength, and resilience, qualities that align with the values and aspirations of Afikair. The design aimed to evoke a sense of pride and connection to Africa, while also representing the airline’s commitment to offering swift, safe, and efficient service.
Beyond the logo, the brand identity extended to various touchpoints, including:
1. Business Card: The business card design incorporated the bold and dynamic elements of the Springbok logo, along with a clean, modern layout that reflects the airline’s professional yet approachable nature. The colors and typography were carefully selected to maintain brand consistency and make a lasting impression.
2. Luggage Tag: The luggage tag was designed to be both functional and visually appealing. It featured the Springbok emblem prominently, along with space for passenger details. The design ensured easy recognition of Afikair’s brand while maintaining practicality for travelers.
3. Ticket Envelope: The ticket envelope carried forward the brand’s visual language, providing passengers with a memorable experience right from the moment they receive their tickets. The envelope design combined sleek aesthetics with the vibrancy of African culture, ensuring that it stood out while remaining practical and user-friendly.
The final phase of the project involved applying the brand identity to an aircraft. The visual identity of the brand on the plane was a critical aspect of the assignment, as it served as a moving billboard for Afikair across the skies of Africa. The aircraft design featured the Springbok logo prominently on the tail, with the airline’s colors and motifs extending along the fuselage. This design not only reinforced the airline’s identity but also aimed to create a strong visual impact, making Afikair instantly recognizable at any airport.
In conclusion, the brand identity program for Afikair was designed to resonate with African travelers by leveraging cultural symbols and modern design principles. The project encompassed a wide range of branding elements, all unified under a cohesive visual identity that reflects the airline’s values and vision.
