Diamond cuts—the shape, proportions, and arrangement of facets in a diamond—are often judged by their relation to light. Brilliance, fire, scintillation, and overall appearance play into a diamond’s assigned value. Before the advent of electricity, the best way to ascertain a diamond’s brightness was to hold it up to candlelight. The ideal cut for such subtle lighting was the rose cut, as captured candlelight shone right through it.

Diamonds are the forever gemstone, the eternal love symbol in marriage and the hardest gem there is. There is no doubt that diamonds play a large role in our business, but the facts are: Prices are dropping, people are hesitating, and synthetic diamonds are losing resell value. The current hesitancy to spend on diamonds, coupled with clients’ continued desire for a colourless diamond-like natural gem, point to one potential alternative: diamond replacements. While few gemstones can take the diamond’s place, natural gemstone substitutes remain within the realm of possibility for you and your customers.

Treatment processes are used to enhance the colour, clarity, durability, and appearance of gemstones, ensuring their saleability in a competitive market. While modern treatment methods guarantee the production of more attractive gems, their advancement ensures the challenging nature of treatment detection. Treatments are sometimes undertaken to deceive and defraud consumers. Depending on the treatment process, treated gems may not be durable in routine situations—such as normal jewellery wear and cleaning—and may be even more vulnerable to more extreme procedures such as heating during jewellery repairs.
