Do you have an annual New Year’s resolutions?

Would you enjoy a raw fish sandwich? I have ro admit it wouldnt have been my thing 10 years ago, but i quite enjoy sushi, and this happened to be the freshest fish! I have been looking forward to visiting Germany for as long as I can remember. My ancestry is a mixed bag, but I am 1/4 German. It’s a strange feeling, knowing that part of my heritage belongs there and yet not understanding the culture or the language well. I’m definitely going to have to go back again someday and head to the cities where my family literally resided, but for now, it was such an incredible experience to get a taste of my culture!

Have you ever been able to be a part of a missions team or philanthropic work? This week we were privileged to work with some local pastors to bring food to those who needed it! What a lovely display of love in meeting practical needs! We have many more things we are planning on doing over this next week and I’m so blessed to be a part of it!

Which food is your favourite? when we travel, we love to try local foods, but we also are very mindful of our budget. Here were some of our favourite things that we tried. I have to admit that we’ve been to Quebec many times so these are just some of the favourites that we keep returning to. I also love that many of these foods are pretty much available all across Canada. The only thing is that they are not terribly favourable to your waistline! 😂

There has always been something so magnetic about my uncle Dave! He’s always made people feel so warm and invited when they’re with him, and everyone I know speaks of his kindness and selflessness! We had such a fun time having so many chats, butter, tarts, and card games! It was a day very well spent!

Do you have a regular date night? What do you like to do? For us, we try to spend the full day on Friday together doing fun things! Most of the time we just go for long bike rides, sometimes play tennis, get an ice cream, and then watch a good movie together. Then, for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, our birthdays or Christmas we often will buy each other experiences. Sometimes that’s an excursion on a trip that we’re going to be going on, or a sports game, or theatre performance in the city. On the most part, we’re really simple people , and don’t mind just going for a walk on a trail hand-in-hand! ❤️ All we need to do on date night is just have good conversation and focus on each other!

Do you have any tips on what I should learn in Portuguese? I have my days down, and ‘Ola!’

Also, do you have recommendations of coffee shops or food I should try in Ponta Delgada?

We are really looking forward to it!!

Rookie mistake!

Have you ever had a cultural faux pas?

I’ve been to many cultural destinations that require certain dress codes and I’ve been to some areas where I was sure it would have been ultra conservative and required head to toe covering throughout the country and got there and they didn’t expect ‘Westerners’ to dress covered except in holy places!

If you are travelling with a tour company, ask them how they would appreciate you dressing or ask your travel agent! You can also Google the country you’re visiting, or download the CultureGuide app for help!

Beat rule of thumb is to always carry a scarf with you and you’ll be ready to go in a moment!

Do you have any to add to the list?

Here are 8 More Travel Apps for your International (or Domestic) Travel!

Here are some top notch apps that are a must to download! I have used them so often when we travel and have been so thankful for these pocket resources!

Find the link to these excursions in the comments below!
Alaska is known for its nature, totem poles and Gold Rush history! So you won’t want to miss some of these excursions!

Seattle is a great place to visit the aquarium, the Space Needle, Chihuli garden, and the original Starbucks!

Vancouver is also also a natural Beauty with Stanley Park in the Capilano suspension bridge!

Juneau is the most beautiful little landmark city, where you can visit the Mendenhall glacier, go to the top of the gondola or to just walk around the city.

Ketchikan is the home to Creek Street and many totem poles. I loved my experience of salmon fishing, but you could also go zip lining or see a lumberjack cut down some trees.

Sidka used to be the capital city and has a big Russian influence. Grab a free transfer from the cruise port to downtown. Then walk to the national park to see totem poles, and watch out for Eagles.

Skagway was probably my favourite with the White Pass train . it was so fun to see where the people used to walk to get to the gold rush in the middle of the mountains. The city also has a lot of character with wooden sidewalks.

Learning, a whole new language can be daunting, and yet there is something really special about being able to communicate with others on your travel.

I remember a time when a sweet Colombian, Spanish woman was teaching me some Spanish before I went on my philanthropic trap to the Dominican. We met for four weeks and went over four sheets of paper. I studied numbers colors, items of clothing, directions, modes of transportation etc., until she thought that I had a good understanding of the basics.

Fast forward to our trip and I had some spare time to go shopping in the city. All I was craving was a good chocolate bar. I took some of the travellers and we headed to the grocery store and I proceeded to ask, “Where is the chocolate?”, “ what aisle is it in?”, “How much is it?”, and ended with, “Thank you!”

Everyone around me was so surprised that I was speaking Spanish, and being understood. The funny thing is is they hadn’t no idea how little I knew. However, I also felt super proud that I could have some kind of interaction with the locals. They knew I was trying to communicate, and they were more than willing to speak with me and help me!

So you don’t need to know the whole language, but this is a good start!

If I was honest, I would add a toothbrush and a brush to this list. I don’t know how many times I have gone on vacation and forgotten the simplest things. I wake up in the morning brush my teeth and return my toothbrush straight in the drawer, never to put it back into my suitcase.

Over the years, I’ve wised up to some of the things that are commonly forgotten, and I have made a travel bag that is dedicated to my trips.

If you were looking for some of these items, I linked some of these in Amazon. You can find that list in my bio.

Life is good, until it isn’t… and then, if you hold on… it is again.

Many of you know that I’m a mom of three children (an empty nester until a month ago), and a daughter of parents who live with us (in their own suite). A few years ago we picked up our home of 17 years and moved to a city two hours away… away from friends we had invested in, a job I loved with great co-workers and clients, a church we loved and had great community with, and away from our kids who all moved out. In a blink of an eye… or so it seemed, life was different. Everything we depended on was different and needed to be reworked.

I’m sure there are so many people who relate with this in one way or another as life is always changing. I have been so thankful for my life. I have a husband who adores me, a job I love, great friends and family… I was just saying to Al the other day, that we are living the ‘Good old days’ right now… and I believe it.

Then unexpectedly, the darkness creeps in. You feel unusually sad about a situation, a body ache becomes a concern, a life situation becomes overwhelming, you’re lonely and long for a coffee with an old friend, you worry about a family member and it’s hard to see the bright end of a situation.

I’ve been reminded by a study we did recently, that it’s normal to walk through these moments of pain. We’re to ask ourselves, “What am I to learn?”, and “What am I trying not to feel?” and then answer honestly. Then, don’t leave it there! Every evening ask, “What am I grateful for?”, “What is something I learned today?”, to end your day looking at the positive. Our minds are incredible… with enough training, we can change our minds and thoughts for the better, to better our mental health and then the quality of our lives.

For whatever you’re going through, know that you’re not alone… allow yourself some time to think things through, cry, and feel the feels… but don’t forget to remember something your grateful for!

I’ll go first! I’m thankful for YOU, this lovely on-line community!

What are you thankful for?
