I hosted the second Black Women in Malaga, Spain meetup today 🇪🇸❤️

I created this community less than 2 months ago, and we’re already at over 100 members! 🤯

I’ve been fascinated with the immigrant/nomad/expat space since 2018. One of the aspects that reassured me the most about aspiring to live this life was the fact that Black communities are EVERYWHERE.

I’ve had the pleasure of joining Black community for meals in places like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and others.

Once I saw that a community didn’t exist for Black women Malaga, Spain specifically, I knew it was my turn to give back by creating one.

…and here we are. Be the change you want to see! 🤎

As highly requested, here is a look at my first home ❤️

I bought it in 2015 for $263,000 which is WILD to think about in 2024 considering how much prices have increased since.

Till this day, I am shocked that I was approved for this mortgage because even though it was priced well, I was only earning about $65,000 at the time at my monthly fees are up about 55% of my income.

It all worked out there, and I will forever be grateful for my little Liberty Village home 🥰 P.S.: If you didn’t know, this home is partly where the name of my brand, Liberty Leave, came from 😊

Can we talk about the power of manifestation? ✨🥹

I wrote this note down on Tuesday minutes after launching my first store () selling budget planners and trackers. I considered it my “ambitious stretch goal.”

Did I fully believe it would actually happen? Tbh, no 😅

But, I’ve seen folks openly talk about the power of not only just writing your goals down on paper, but also writing them in a way that assumes you’ve already achieved them. Worth a shot, right?

Well… not only did I achieve this stretch goal, I ACHIEVED IT IN ~24 HOURS! 🤯

I’m so grateful for all the support from my community, and I cannot wait to see how fixupszn (which was supposed to be a “fun little low effort side project”😅) continues to evolve over the coming months.

I truly hope these budget trackers & planners make it easier for you to manage your money and work towards financial freedom!

Today officially marks my ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY as a full-time entrepreneur! 🥳

It’s been a journey full of ups & downs since getting laid off from my last job, and I’m so grateful that I’m able to make this lifestyle of being a Finance + Travel Creator & Educator at a reality.

Here are some accomplishments I’m most proud of:

I feel strongly that we should not have to work full-time, consistently, from the time we finish school to the time we retire (if we are privileged enough to take a break).

I’ve taken a 6 month break from work to travel the world (2019), took a 2 month stress leave from my job to recover from the worst burnout I’ve ever experienced (2023), and now, after being laid off from my last job, I’m doing a semi-career break (aka ) and semi building business and exploring entrepreneurship.

I think we should have the option to build breaks in our overall career plans because rest is resistance. Frankly, we could all use some time and space to figure our s**t out to see if the thing we’re giving 40+ hours a week doing even fulfills us, or if there’s something better out there for us.

The Peak’s annual list celebrates up-and-coming young leaders shaping Canada’s economy, culture, and society. The 2024 Emerging Leaders are ambitious Canadian leaders under 40 who go above and beyond to make a change.

As a new entrepreneur, this is such an honour. I’m only just getting started with my company, .

If you’re not familiar with a Liberty Leave, I define it as the act of giving yourself permission to take time & space to leave behind what doesn’t bring you liberty, for what does. It’s a community that supports women to make purposeful pivots like career breaks, career changes, financial glow ups, and more.

An unfortunate reality: the high volume of layoffs that happened in 2023 are continuing to happen in 2024.

According to layoffs.fyi, almost 40,000 people have already been laid off in 2024 and in tech alone (157 companies). We’re not even done February yet 😳

If you have a full-time job and only one stream of income, I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to financially prepare for a potential layoff. Even if you’re a high performer in your job and your company seems to be doing better than ever, you really never know!

I was laid off from my tech job in May of last year and because I proactively prepared for it financially, it wasn’t a catastrophic event for me.

She’s officially a Malaga girlie 🇪🇸🥹. I got my TIE aka my Foreigner Identity Card!

Timeline of how I became an official (temporary) resident of Spain:

August 2022: I got a new role at my Toronto-based job and my entire team was based in Europe. Managing the timezone difference was rough 😖. I had the idea to move to Europe to make work life a little easier and to experience living abroad, and my partner was down.

January 2023: I put my downtown Toronto condo up for sale to make the move happen 🚚. It sold in less than a week!!

February 2023: My partner and I visited Lisbon, Portugal, where we had originally planned to move. We were not feeling the vibes once we got there 😬

March 2023: My moved out of my first home 🏠

May 2023: I got laid off from my job. The move was still on though! My partner and I visited Malaga, Spain later in the month and decided this was where we wanted to move. We looooved it! The beach sold us. 🏝️

September & October 2023: My partner and I put in our applications for the visa (Youth Mobility Visa) and got them!!! 🥹

December 2023: My partner and I made the big move to Spain ✈️ We also did our in-person appointment to get our fingerprints taken and documents checked to apply for our official foreigner identification cards

Jan 2024: We officially got our cards! We are legit residents of Spain for a year! 🎉🎉🎉 We also got our Spanish bank accounts 😊

This has been such an exciting journey so far, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year plays out 🥰
