The 24th day or the fourth Wednesday of the period of Great Lent, is called Mijink (Mid-Lent) symbolizing that the first half of the period of Great Lent has already passed. In the Armenian Apostolic Church, where it is custom to abstain from any and all animal products for the entire 40 day duration until Easter, Mijink is a welcome treat.

According to the folk tradition, on this day, people bake unleavened cake and put a coin in it while baking. The current year will be successful for the member of the family who will have the coin in their portion. The cake used is usually Gata, a sweet, flat armenian cake.

When cutting the pieces some leave an extra piece for the "house".

Who was the lucky one in your household this year?

Happy Lunar New Year 🧧🐲

As per Chinese zodiac, which is based on the cycle of twelve signs along the path of the sun through cosmos, this year is the year of the dragon. The dragon is revered as a symbol of power, nobility and good luck.

Aligned with the new moon starts the celebrations of Lunar New Year. They last for 15 days, until the first full moon of the lunar calendar. In Asian countries, it’s referred to as the Spring Festival, Chinese , Vietnamese , Korean and Tibetan .

In earlier times, the celebration was introduced for farmers and workers to have a break from their year-long hard labour, to refresh and prepare for a restart in spring.

Now, it is an occasion to gather with extended family, eat a feast, give gifts and share the wealth.

Happy New Year to all those celebrating!

Traditionally, on this day, youth gather to celebrate. They collect seven different types of flowers and make beautiful headpieces. They also collect water from seven different sources into a vase, drop in a belonging of theirs in the water to have their fortune read. Between the fortune for each person, they sing songs, dance and celebrate.

These traditions are kept to this day. The water may not be from seven sources, nonetheless, there’s a bowl of small papers with fortune written on them (in 2023, typed and printed) and a vase with water where people drop a ring, keys, hair pin or any small belonging, retrievable once the fortune is read. The celebrations take place outdoors, hopefully surrounded by spring flowers and a bright sun.

In Armenian this day is known as #Համբարձում (Ascension), although some may refer to it as Վիճակ (fortune) or Ջան Գիւլում (praise of flowers).

As we embark on another anniversary of Shushi’s liberation, it’s difficult to not reflect on 2020.

Reflecting on the scars of war brings a mix of emotions - sadness for the losses and anger for the pain and suffering. In the midst of anger and sadness, we can’t forget to hope.

Hope and strive towards a future where we live, love and dance again in Shushi…in a free Artsakh… in a united Armenia.

Happy Lunar New Year 🧧🐰

As per Chinese zodiac, which is based on the cycle of twelve signs along the path of the sun through cosmos, this year is the year of the rabbit. The rabbit embodies relaxation, quietness and contemplation.

15 years.

15 years after his assassination, we are still waiting for justice to be served.

Hrant D**k (Հրանդ Տինք) - founder and editor-in-chief of bilingual newspaper Agos in Turkey - was gunned down in front of the newspaper office on January 19, 2007. He was Armenian and was advocating for the minority rights in Turkey. With that we’ll let you make the connection.

Over 100,000 allies held signs of “We are all Hrant D**k” and “We are all Armenian” as they mourned this big loss at his funeral.

15 years later… We are all Armenian. We are all Hrant D**k. 1,500,000+1.
