Typically caused by a fall onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH), a Colles' fracture of the radius creates a distinctive bend of the wrist, known as the dinner-fork deformity.

December is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month –

Stomach, or “gastric”, cancer often starts in the stomach’s inner surface – in the glandular tissue. Symptoms (e.g., indigestion, heartburn, bloating, etc.) may be absent initially, but can develop as the tumor enlarges or spreads to other areas. Stomach cancer is usually treated with surgery and chemotherapy or chemoradiation (a combination of chemo and radiation therapy).

SEPTEMBER IS WORLD ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH

The most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder in which abnormal changes in the brain set in motion an unusual buildup of proteins. Forming what are known as amyloid plaques and tau tangles, these proteins cause neurons (brain cells) to cease functioning. Increasing areas of the brain are affected as neurons continue to lose connection and die, and the brain tissue atrophies (shrinks) accordingly.

Although these changes can start long before symptoms appear, in time they are reflected in a decline in the person’s normal function, such as compromised memory and social skills.

Itchy eyes? It might not be just summer allergies. Dry Eye* Syndrome results from a problem with lubrication of the eyeball. There may be not enough tears, or the tears may not have the correct composition. This can cause inflammation of the eye, and potentially even damage to the cornea.

When you blink, a thin film of tears is spread over the eyeball. Tears are made up of three layers: an oily layer (an outer layer that keeps watery tears from evaporating too quickly); a watery layer (this middle layer washes the eye, removing dust and debris, and is what runs down our cheeks); and a mucus layer (the inner layer allows watery tears to adhere to the eyeball).

Together, these three layers keep our eyes moist. If there’s a problem with tear production, Dry Eye may result – with symptoms like scratchiness, itching, burning or blurred vision. Or if there’s a problem with the oily layer, your eyes may create more tears to compensate for the watery film evaporating too quickly – but it’s still called Dry Eye – even if you’re crying.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer occurs in the large bowel, otherwise known as the colon (‘colo-’), or in the re**um (‘-rectal’). People over 50 are at increased risk of colorectal cancer. Other risk factors include long-term alcohol consumption, smoking ci******es, eating red meat and obesity. The most popular screening test is the f***l immunochemical test (FIT). This entails using a kit to collect a sample of your stool and dropping it at a lab or into the mail. Colonoscopy can also be used to assess for colorectal cancer. Catching it earlier provides a much better chance of survival. There’s no shame in talking about colorectal cancer or asking your physician about screening for it.

Having trouble catching your breath? It might not just be love –

Hemothorax occurs when blood collects in the pleural cavity – the potential space between the lining of the lungs and rib cage. Blunt trauma injuries can cause a hemothorax, including rib fractures, lung damage, or rupture of small blood vessels. A large collection of blood can cause ventilation issues or infections – and needs to be drained via tube thoracostomy, pictured here.

Most infants arrive healthy, but some can be born with congenital heart defects, such as coarctation of the aorta. As blood leaves the heart, it courses through the aorta, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the entire body. But, in coarctation of the aorta, narrowing restricts this flow of blood. Luckily, this serious defect is readily corrected by surgery early in life, allowing the infant to grow strong and healthy.

Illustrated Medicine:
The scaphoid is the largest of the eight carpal (hand) bones. It can be fractured along its ‘waist’ or mid-point, often due to falling on an outstretched hand (FOOSH). A displaced fracture through the bone can disrupt its blood supply, resulting in healing complications, with the end of the bone nearest the wrist sometimes undergoing avascular necrosis or death of the bone due to lack of blood. This can cause long-term problems in the wrist including pain and disability.

Ever tripped on something hidden inside a pile of leaves and fallen straight into autumn? If you rolled your ankle, chances are you may have sprained one of the ligaments in your Lateral Collateral Ligament Complex (the ATFL, PTFL, and CFL). These ligaments connect to the fibula, the talus bone (the ‘perch’ for the tibia) and the calcaneus (heel) bone of your foot. Experts recommend taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and to PRICE: Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate.
