Ankle joint fusion surgery typically involves removal of the degenerated joint surfaces down to bleeding bone. Here, the end of the fibula was removed and fragmented into bone grafting material. This was packed into the joint to allow it to heal in a fused (non-bending) position.

December is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month –

Stomach, or “gastric”, cancer often starts in the stomach’s inner surface – in the glandular tissue. Symptoms (e.g., indigestion, heartburn, bloating, etc.) may be absent initially, but can develop as the tumor enlarges or spreads to other areas. Stomach cancer is usually treated with surgery and chemotherapy or chemoradiation (a combination of chemo and radiation therapy).

SEPTEMBER IS WORLD ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH

The most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder in which abnormal changes in the brain set in motion an unusual buildup of proteins. Forming what are known as amyloid plaques and tau tangles, these proteins cause neurons (brain cells) to cease functioning. Increasing areas of the brain are affected as neurons continue to lose connection and die, and the brain tissue atrophies (shrinks) accordingly.

Although these changes can start long before symptoms appear, in time they are reflected in a decline in the person’s normal function, such as compromised memory and social skills.

Itchy eyes? It might not be just summer allergies. Dry Eye* Syndrome results from a problem with lubrication of the eyeball. There may be not enough tears, or the tears may not have the correct composition. This can cause inflammation of the eye, and potentially even damage to the cornea.

When you blink, a thin film of tears is spread over the eyeball. Tears are made up of three layers: an oily layer (an outer layer that keeps watery tears from evaporating too quickly); a watery layer (this middle layer washes the eye, removing dust and debris, and is what runs down our cheeks); and a mucus layer (the inner layer allows watery tears to adhere to the eyeball).

Together, these three layers keep our eyes moist. If there’s a problem with tear production, Dry Eye may result – with symptoms like scratchiness, itching, burning or blurred vision. Or if there’s a problem with the oily layer, your eyes may create more tears to compensate for the watery film evaporating too quickly – but it’s still called Dry Eye – even if you’re crying.
