The whole idea to Gohan defeating Cell in Dragon Ball Z was due to him becoming the lead character, but that idea got scrapped by Akira Toriyama. If I remember correctly it was due to Gohan's reluctance to fight and desire for a normal life made him less suited to be the central character driving the plot forward.
