“No one who reads this masterpiece will ever doubt Margaret Duley’s well-earned place of honour in the Newfoundland literary canon.”

Engagingly written by historian Margot I. Duley, this captivating and authoritative literary biography traces the life and work of Margaret Duley, Newfoundland's first internationally acclaimed novelist. Within these pages, Duley is freed from flattened descriptions of her as a wealthy jeweller’s daughter, unearthing the origins of her lifelong search for a fairer society and her deep appreciation for her island home.

Coming November 29th!

Skillfully interwoven with historical events, including the devastating impact of the first World War, the women’s suffrage movement, the Depression, and the loss of Newfoundland’s self-government, Extraordinary Passages explores the influence of these critical times on Margaret Duley’s life and writing. Within these pages, Duley is freed from flattened descriptions of her as a wealthy jeweller’s daughter, unearthing the origins of her lifelong search for a fairer society and her deep appreciation for her island home.

Author Margot I. Duley is an historian and Margaret’s niece. Reflecting on personal knowledge, novels, letters, and a wide array of other sources, Margot I. Duley draws a lively portrait of the brilliant, complex and indomitable woman regarded as a precursor to modern feminist writers.

Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sept. 30 is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is a time for the Memorial University community to reflect on our history and the legacy of residential schools in this country and in our province. There are planned activities on each campus leading up to Sept. 30 to recognize this important day; all members of the university community are encouraged to participate.

On Friday, Sept. 27, staff, faculty and students are encouraged to wear orange. Wearing or displaying orange is a symbol of solidarity with those who survived residential schools and an act of remembrance for those who never made it home. Orange shirts are available to purchase at the St. John’s campus bookstore (UC-2006, all proceeds will be donated to First Light).

For a full schedule of activities, please see the link in the bio.
