Another big loss in the local music community today. Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of John Hutton. I remember this conversation from Churchill Park Music Festival very much and we were shooting the s**t on music and talking about my dad and now both of you are gone. I can only imagine the chat you guys will be having on the other side!

He was such a down to earth human being and loved music and talking about it! He will be sorely missed.

What a great week this has been. I’ve been getting back out to see some great local shows and it’s the most since dad passed away. Dad would have wanted me to have been out and networking with all these great people and it feels so good to be out again enjoying some phenomenal local talent. No better way to wrap up this week than celebrating With Violet’s new album “With Friends”! Thank to Spencer and the rest of the group for the invite!

What a great time tonight to see my first show at the Battery Cafe! Darcy Scott, Janeil Chantelle, and Selina Boland all provided some great music for a fine crowd at this wonderfully intimate venue. Give them some love by following their social media, purchasing their merchandise, or attending shows like these!

Crazy to believe it’s been a year already since we lost Mark Hiscock. He was always down to earth and a true champion of our music and the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. We miss you every day, Marky.

I figure I would post this photo from MusicNL week last year because I’ve been struggling for a while on how to respond to my absence from the Musical Connections podcast over the past four months. Hope this will do it justice.

I originally had planned to return as soon as possible following the posting of my top 25 of 2025 in albums and New Found Releases. Little did I know how time consuming all of that would be. I got it finished around early January and I had plans to record both episodes and start to schedule interviews for the new year, but what was a lingering cloud over my head was my dad’s declining health. As most people know already, he was diagnosed with two forms of cancer. State 4 Advanced Prostate and High-Grade Neuroendocrine Carcinoma. After a month making hospital visits, he passed away on February 23rd. It’ll be two months as of this week and it’s still so hard to believe he’s not here anymore.

I will not apologize for taking care of my family because if not for them, I would not be here right now. I will apologize for not following through on delivering content that I promised and announced. As it comes to the Musical Connections podcast, I have no idea when it will be coming back. Losing a quarter of the year already sucks. How it looks when I do bring it back is still up in the air. I have five interviews remaining from MusicNL week that I haven’t put out yet but I’m not sure how timely they are since they were recorded in November and it’s almost May. I might put them out yet, they may never air. It’s a lot to consider so I’m going to need more time before I make any calls on Musical Connections.

However, it doesn’t mean that this podcast is done. My dad would want this to carry on because of how much it has changed my life and that I will do!

I haven’t been out to events much since the start of the year so it felt good to get out today and be out where I’m most comfortable and that’s connecting with our music scene. If you want to find a bigger fan of our music than me, look no further than Ricky Dalton. He held his ninth annual Janeway fundraiser this weekend and it was a pleasure to be there to support a man who is one of our biggest supporters of music in the industry today! I’m looking forward to seeing you front of the stage at the festivals this year, Ricky!

Happy world Autism Awareness day to all my fellow people on the Autism Spectrum! I haven’t spoke about this in a while so here goes.

When it comes to the term autism awareness, it shouldn’t be locked to just one day, it is a week to week, year round discussion of continuing to break down barriers for people like myself and others who face the constant challenges that the real world throws our way. Whether it is a lack of safe spaces, or restricted availability to speech and therapeutic resources, it’s a constant struggle for many people on the spectrum or parents dealing with children on the spectrum.

For me personally, my life has been all about trying to be accepted. Whether it’s at school, at bowling, at work, or even among my peers in broadcasting, I have always had to fight twice as hard to achieve my dreams and goals than my contemporaries. For years, I was ashamed that I was diagnosed with Autism, thinking that it was a chronic disease that I was cursed with. As the years went on, I have slowly been dropping that mindset and being proud of my autism and the opportunities that have come my way because of accepting who I am. I have been fortunate to have a wonderful family support system to give me the tools and resources necessary to achieve successes and live a regular life to the best of my abilities.

Unfortunately, there are people not as fortunate or as lucky. It could be lack of resources to avail of, the parent not caring enough for the child or both. This is why I wanted to use my platform not to have you viewing this feel pity for me or my peers, but by continuing the discussion to see how we can make live for people living on the spectrum much better and more consistent.

From more speech pathologists to help people with autism learn how to speak, more autism friendly spaces, more psychologists, less barriers for people with autism to seek job opportunities, that all starts with talking with people who are on the spectrum, not shunning them or pitying them.

I am proud to be on the autism spectrum.

If you have been seeing the news lately, MUN Students Union are looking to shut down a media institution that has given a start to many people in government, music, media, and more! I am lucky and thankful to be one of those people.

You may know me for my work at VOWR and being your musical connector, none of that happens without the incredible staff at CHMR. The media person of the year awards, the moments, they all started here. I would not be where I am too right now if not for CHMR.

Want me to keep going? I’ll list off a couple of names for you. Paddy Daly, Fred Hutton, Tom Power, Bob Cole, Heather Barrett, Ariana Kelland, Brian Tobin, Deborah Birmingham, Roger Howse, Sean Panting, Geoff Younghusband.

What do they all have in common? They got their start at CHMR. While they all might not be in media now, it’s a wonderful place to learn more about public speaking, project management, interviews, and a whole lot of skills that has helped them into the positions in government, comedy, management, and more! It can also be a space to assist future students in their careers wherever that path may lead.

Look at all the local musicians that would not get crucial airplay to help kickstart their careers. Whether it’s a spin not the air or an interview/live performance, it’s a foot in the door and who knows what a feature on CHMR can do for an aspiring musician.

In a world where campus and community radio are needed now more than ever, we should be looking forward to how can CHMR be a place for local musicians to get an opportunity on the air, or to one person that wants to get better at public speaking. They could start a radio show, a podcast. Closing CHMR would be a step backwards.

The financial situation is not ideal, but I believe that CHMR will see a way out of it. This doesn’t constitute in shutting down a service for students that they can use to network or develop crucial skills to benefit their future careers. It’s unacceptable for the MUN Students Union to try and shut down a cultural institution that has cultivated much of the provinces and country’s biggest names.

I’ve ranted enough. I’ll end with this.

CHMR should not be shut down. Period.
