After 2 adventure-filled weeks with my family home for an extended August long weekend, my house is now quiet and still.

I miss them already & want to do it all over again.

And I remember that my heart is full.

I’m so grateful that we love to be together and do fun things, even if it’s inventing a version of the ‘Twister’ game on the boulders at the base of the Bow Falls in Banff.

It’s hard to let them go, but I look forward to our next time and so thankful for FaceTime!

Perennials + Annuals = Garden love. I have always mixed a few annuals into my perennial garden beds because they bridge the gap when perennials of different flowering times are fading in and out of bloom.

I am particularly happy that I tucked in these little Fuchsia Supertunia Vistas for a spot of colour and as a ground cover fill-in.

I’ve never used trailing Petunias for this application before.

And so glad I did:

🩷 Their colour is so bright, I can see them from a mile away.

🩷 They are spreading out and filling in their space marvellously.

🩷 They are SO easy care, ticking away here in the heat, the sun, the drought, and the rain. (This year has been a real mixed bag weather-wise).

Just wanted to share this - I like it when my experiments turn out!

How about you? What’s worked for you?

💦 We have interrupted our regularly scheduled summer and are currently featuring rain - so grateful!

🪟 We went from every window open, every fan running, and “Sweetheart, I think we need a fan for our spare bedroom when the kids visit”..,

To:

🪟 Every window closed, every fan off, and the winter quilt on the bed…

🤷🏻‍♀️

💦 But the rain is perfect.

And summer ☀️ will resume shortly.

For those of you who are middle kids like me, this is our day!

Being a middle child is an interesting place to grow up, you’re neither the first nor the last, sometimes you can be the invisible and other times you’re anything but.

Sending ❤️ love to all you ‘middles’ today!

✂️ Deadheading encourages more flowering and toward the end of the bloom cycle, leave the old flowers to produce seed pods to allow them to self sow or sow purchased seeds in the fall to yield a fresh crop next spring.

For cut flowers, harvest the buds just as they are cracking and showing a little colour.

Sear the ends of the stems with the flame of a lighter for 7-10 seconds or place the stem ends in boiling water for up to 30 seconds to stop the milky sap from clogging up the xylem or place the stem ends in boiling water for the same amount of time.

🌥️ Cultivating plants in the shade may seem like a daunting task, yet there is indeed life beyond the shadows!

🗝️ Just like in any garden, the key lies in the harmonious pairing of suitable plants with their designated spots.

Among the array of options for shade gardens, Astilbes stand out.

Their ferny-like foliage imparts a graceful touch, while their airy flower spikes bring a soft elegance to damp, low light areas.

🪴Plant Astilbes in rich, well-draining soil, ensuring that their crowns are just below the soil surface.

💦 While they prefer moist soils, stagnant water is not conducive to their growth and their roots will rot.

Astilbes are not heavy feeders and don’t require much fertilization; one application of a water-soluble fertilizer yearly during their active growth period in late June or early July can suffice for the entire gardening season.

🍂 Allow Astilbes to wither naturally during autumn, tidying them up in the fall or come spring by trimming back old stems.

Avoid pulling at the stems as to not accidentally pull them out with their shallow roots.

Do you have a favourite Astilbe?

Fresh cut flowers are front & center this week as Valentine’s Day approaches and I’ve got some tips to get them last as long as possible!

Extending cut flower life is all about bacterial containment and nutrition.

1️⃣ Pull out a squeaky clean vase, preferably one that blocks sunlight.

Not to discount glass vases, but they allow ALL the light.

☀️ Light contributes to bacterial and algae growth, and the less light, the less growth.

2️⃣ Fill the vase with fresh, clean, lukewarm water.

Flower stems take up warm water more easily than cold water.

3️⃣ Boost the water with flower food provided by the florist to meet nutritional needs.

4️⃣ Give the flower stems a fresh cut before placing them in the water.

Use a clean, sharp knife or pair of sharp clippers to trim 2.5-5.0 cm (1-2”) above the base of the stem to open the xylem, which are the water carrying tubes.

Dull knives and clippers will crush the xylem ends, closing them off rather than opening them.

Cut the stems at a 45°-60° angle to maximize surface area for water uptake.

5️⃣ Strip any leaves that would remain in the water to decrease bacterial populations.

6️⃣ If the water gets cloudy, change it, rinse off the stems, refill the vase and add more cut flower food.

Giving the stems a fresh cut would be helpful, too.

Dahlias are stunning additions to a sunny garden!

Originating from Mexico, Dahlias are part of the Asteraceae family and with tens of thousands of registered cultivars that offer stunning colours, flower shapes, and plant sizes, there’s surely one to fit your gardening space.

🐝 Not only do they make beautiful cut flowers, but they also are a favourite for pollinators.

Many Dahlia varieties grow from tubers.

Choose tubers that have an intact outer skin and are firm to touch. Moldy & squishy tubers never end well.

Dahlias thrive in warm weather and don’t tolerate cool temperatures well, even the slightest frost will damage their leaves, so wait until the threat of frost has passed before placing them outdoors.

☀️ Grow Dahlias in full sun and well-draining soil for the best results.

🏃‍♀️ Dahlias have a vigorous metabolism and need to be watered and fertilized regularly.

🌱 Pinch them back at leaf nodes to keep them bushy, and deadhead old flowers to keep them blooming.

I often grow my Dahlias in a tomato cage to give their hollow stems extra support. As they grow, the cage wires disappear in the foliage.

Keep a watchful eye on Dahlias:

• They are a favourite of pests like slugs, deer, rabbits, and aphids.

• Dahlias are susceptible to powdery mildew, molds, and botrytis during warm, humid weather.

Are you a Hydrangea fan?

These stunning shrubs, native to parts of Asia and South America, are known for their long-lasting autumn blooms and are surprisingly easy to care for.

Hydrangeas love a few hours of gentle morning sunshine, but shade from the strong afternoon sun is essential due to their shallow root systems.

Plant your Hydrangeas in high-quality, moist, and well-draining soil. Adding a layer of mulch will help maintain cool and moist roots.

There are two basic type of Hydrangeas that grow in zone 3-4: Panicula and Arborescens.

1️⃣ Paniculata types have cone-shaped blossoms and are the hardiest for prairie garden environments.

Paniculatas bloom on new growth and benefit from a light trim at branch tips yearly or biyearly.

Good options: Pinky Winky, Little Lime, Fire Light, Quick Fire, Little Quick Fire, Invincibelle Spirit II & Bobo all by Winners, and Bombshell, Lavalamp Flare, P*e Gee, and Limelight.

2️⃣ Arborescens varieties bear broad, dome, circular-shaped flower bundles.

Arborescens also bloom on new growth, but they benefit from hard pruning.

Good varieties: Incrediball, Invincibelle Spirit, and Invincibelle Ruby, all by Winners, and Annabelle.

I have a free downloadable Hydrangea comparison chart so much in my blog called ‘How to Grow Hydrangeas on the Canadian Prairies & Other Zone 3/4 Locations’ on my website, so be sure to take advantage of those Hydrangea resources!

Black Knot can be tricky to manage and strategies for controlling Black Knot focus on:

⚠️ Early prevention

🛀 Sanitation &

✂️ Pruning

How to do this??

⚠️ Prevention Ideas:

1️⃣ Avoid planting prunus-type trees & shrubs altogether.

2️⃣ If not, plant prunus varieties that are resistant to Black Knot Fungus.

3️⃣ Give each prunus-type tree or shrub a wide berth from other prunus trees & shrubs to reduce disease sharing.

🛀 Sanitation & ✂️ Pruning Ideas:

4️⃣ Walk through your trees and monitor your prunus trees & shrubs every January.

5️⃣ Prune out Black Knot Fungus while the temperatures are well below freezing during January and February with freshly cleaned tools.

✂️ Here’s a few more details on Pruning:

Clean your tools after every cut (you can use Lysol spray, too) and to soak your tools in the bleach water after you are done.

Once locating the gall, prune back down the branch at least 4-8 inches to the next healthy branch collar.

Burn, or discard the gall in a plastic bag.

Do NOT place this in your compost pile or under the trees - the spores and infection will just continue to spread.

What is Black Knot Fungus?

Each January I take a look at Black Knot Fungus because winter is the prime time to prune it out.

Black Knot Fungus is a common fungal infection unique to North America that affects both ornamental and fruit-bearing trees in the 'Prunus' genus.

Black Knot is characterized by hard black bumpy growths on branches and tree trunks.

💩 This infection is sometimes nicknamed 'P**p on a Stick' or 'P**p in a Tree' because that's EXACTLY what it looks like.

Black Knot constricts the growth of the branches beyond the gall causing fruit production to decline & can ruin the appearance of ornamental trees.

This infection weakens infected trees and shrubs, increasing their vulnerability to other disease-causing organisms.

Have you seen any of this on your trees??

I have my share in my yard - that’s where I got these great photos - and I will be scouting my trees for the next while!

My blog, 'Strategies for Dealing with Black Knot Fungus' talks all about it.
