Data Privacy Day
Today is January 28, which means it is Data Privacy Day!
Increasing awareness about our personal data, privacy, and issues with this information it today’s world is something that we can all do! Being smart with our sensitive info is critical and there are just a few steps that you can take to help protect yourself online (and do note that there are many additional ways to protect ourselves, this is just a few ideas)
- Lock your devices- A secure password and/or biometrics will help keep the information on your devices safe if they are ever lost or stollen. And yes, as annoying as it can be sometimes, make sure to use numbers and special characters in your passwords to keep them unique.
- Consider having a VPN and antivirus on all your devices. Make sure to do your research to ensure that your needs are met with the product you choose.
- Only download from trusted sources- and make sure to review your apps regularly. If you notice one that you don’t recall downloading, uninstall it immediately.
- Pay attention to app permissions. Do you know what you’re agreeing to with the new app you just installed? Read the details and understand what you’re giving an app access to.
- Never open suspicious looking emails, private messages, texts, etc. Even just the act of opening an email can provide a spammer or hacker info like your IP address, approximate location, and more.
When it comes to our data and privacy, one can never be too careful! Don’t be scared to do some research to ensure that you are confident with the steps that you are taking… and spread the word!
