“There is no other place I feel more at peace than several metres below the surface of the water, surrounded by schools of fish, bubbles and, yes, even sharks. Life underwater is like being in another world, with alien-like creatures (octopus) and prehistoric-looking species (lobsters) hidden between the volcanic rock formations that make up the bottom of Costa Rica’s Pacific,” writes Madigan Cotterill.

Scuba diving is just one of many amazing activities you can do while visiting Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Click the link below to read Madigan Cotterill’s full itinerary.

In 2024, we launched Here & There: A Canadian Geographic Travel podcast hosted by Liz Beatty. Here & There shares deep-dive travel documentaries from across Canada and around the world — the sort of big-idea stories that might change everything about the way you see places and the people who live there. This year we visited Baddeck, Cape Breton, the Torngat Mountains, went aurora-chasing with award-winning producer Lia Grainger and Alberta night sky watchers and so much more. "A campfire crackles. You’re within a wind’s whistle of the sea. A freshly toasted lobster roll is in hand. It’s also in the minus 10s, you’re layered to the nines, and your body aches pleasantly after a day of hiking, fat biking and snowshoeing. It’s winter in New Brunswick, baby, and it turns out there’s a lot to do," writes Abi Hayward.

"Each geopark begins with the rock beneath your feet. Or, in the case of Charlevoix, rock from outer space," writes Leslie Anthony.

On the way to Percé, Leslie Anthony was curious to learn more about Géoparc de Charlevoix's aspirations. For travellers, Quebec’s Charlevoix region offers a special blend of geological, biological, historical and cultural heritage—all seamlessly intertwined. It’s this unique harmony that defines the region, and celebrated as part of a UNESCO global geopark.

These globally significant sites promote the geology, culture and history while highlighting the importance of using natural resources sustainability and educating people on hazards, such as floods and earthquakes.
