Graduate Student Vacancies (2 MSc & 1 PhD) in Grain Science at the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba
The Future is Gree(ai)n Collaborative Research and Training Experience program is a joint research and training program between the University of Guelph, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Saskatchewan. The Department of Food Science and Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba, project partners are seeking three outstanding graduate students (2 MSc students and 1 PhD student) to join this program in the 2026 Fall term.
1. Dr. Cristina M. Rosell’s Grain Research Lab is looking for an MSc student to work on a project related to “Enzymes in grain processing: from grain transformation to product performance.”
2. Dr. Filiz Koksel Ustundag’s Food Processing Research Lab is looking for an MSc student to work on a project related to “Extrusion processing of grains for the manufacture of RTE breakfast cereals, puffed snacks, texturized vegetable proteins and high-moisture meat analogues.”
3. Dr. Nandika Bandara, Ph.D., CFS's Food Proteins and Bioproducts Lab
is looking for a PhD student to work on a research project on “Nonthermal processing approaches for improving ingredient functionality and flavour of grains.”
The selected candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate closely within the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences. In addition, the student will be immersed in a comprehensive professional development program designed to support their academic growth and ensure a strong foundation for a successful career post-graduation.
Required qualifications
* MSc students MUST hold a BSc degree in Food Science or a relevant field (e.g., Food Science, Microbiology, Food Engineering, or related disciplines)
* The PhD student MUST hold a MSc degree by research in Food Science or related discipline and a BSc degree in Food Science or a relevant field (e.g., Food Science, Microbiology, Food Engineering, or related disciplines)
* Demonstrating excellent organizational, time, and project management skills
* Eager to participate in professional development and research mobility opportunities at partner institutions across Canada
* Interested in close collaboration with government and industry partners
Capable of working as an independent, critical, responsible, and flexible researcher

* Open to thinking and working in an interdisciplinary environment
