I finally visited ALL of Ottawa’s most famous patios…in one night 🥂🎉
From waterfalls to island escapes, the Tavern line is known for their iconic spread of patios that can be spotted all across the capital city. In addition to the summer sunsets and sunny shenanigans, the taverns are also open well into the fall season with weekend DJ nights and their Oktoberfest celebrations! 🍂🍻
Here’s a breakdown of their FOUR Ottawa locations…
Tavern on the Island (@tavernontheisland) is located on Bate Island and can be easily reached by cyclists, water adventurers, and walkers alike.
Tavern on the Falls (@tavernonthefalls) is along the iconic Sussex Drive atop the twin waterfalls that flow into the Ottawa River.
Tavern on the Hill (@tavernonthehillottawa) is the OG tavern just off of Major’s Hill Park and overlooks the entire Ottawa skyline.
Tavern at the Gallery (@tavernatthegallery) is the epitome of Euro vibes tucked beside Canada’s largest gallery in a tree-filled escape.
Now the question is- which patio are you heading to first? 🥂

Stock Market-Themed Brewery (SAVE) 📉🍻
Beyond the Pale in Ottawa (@btpottawa) hosts their Insider Trading event every Thursday. Their popular brews are given a symbol and shown on a big ticker. If you’re lucky, the market may just crash making it the cheapest menu in the city for 5 whole minutes.

Tips for surviving a looooong layover (SAVE) 🛩️
Find a cheap flight with a long layover? Do it. Here are some ways you can navigate and avoid your extended airport stay.
🛌 IN-TERMINAL HOTELS: These are way more common than you think and may not appear on Google Maps. Consult the airport map (beforehand or on arrival). They book by the hour and because they’re in the terminal, you don’t have to exit the airport and go back through security.
🥂 LOUNGES: Even if your credit card doesn’t cover the luxury of lounges, it’s still worth it. Most are $50 USD or less to enter and have free hot food, alcohol, showers, Wi-Fi, chargers, quiet rooms, and more. It may seem pricey, but so are $15 airport egg salad sandwiches. All are different so just be sure to ask the desk for an amenities list before committing.
🛫 FLIGHT CHANGE: This isn’t guaranteed, but it happens. When you land, visit the ‘transfer desk’ or your airlines in-terminal desk and see if they have any earlier flights they can move you to. Airlines work with other airlines so they may be able to put you onto another flight they have a relationship with.
🧖♀️ ENTERTAINMENT: If you’re in one of the bigger airports (Singapore, LA, Hong Kong, Munich) you can enjoy in-terminal entertainment like IMAX movies, spas, swimming pools, ice rinks, surf machines, and more.

Did you know, Ho Chi Minh City has 8 million bikes per its 9 million person population? 🛵 That works out to be almost 90% of their residents!
Now in Vietnam, you need to be 18 to get your motorbike license. The experience of riding bikes doesn’t begin there though…
Motorbikes are often packed with multiple passengers, full families with babies and small children, and even dogs. All onboard at the same time. They really are treated as the equivalent of cars. So for many residents, they’ve had the wind flow through their hair riding on the back for as long as they can remember.
Due to the sheer number and popularity of this method of transit, sometimes the roads just aren’t quite big enough. As a pedestrian, you’ll often come across intersections that seem uncrossable due to its nonstop flow of traffic and have to share sidewalk space. This is all part of the flow, and as a local, is easy peasy! For non-locals, just be sure to look both ways 👀

8 things to know before visiting a shrine in Japan ⬇️
1. Walk on the edges of the pathway - The middle is reserved for gods and goddesses to walk.
2. Dress respectfully - It isn’t enforced, but dressing conservatively (shoulders covered, no cleavage) is expected.
3. Purify yourself before entering - You’ll notice a water station and a ladle. The general rule of thumb is:
👉 Rinse left hand, rinse right hand, cup left hand, fill with water, use that water to rinse mouth, rinse left hand again, turn ladle 90° to rinse, put back.
4. Pay your respects - Throw your money in the offering box, bow twice, clap twice, bow once.
5. No photos inside - Avoid any phone use inside actual temples and buildings in general.
6. Don’t visit if you’re sick, injured, or mourning - These conditions are seen as impure.
7. Buy a fortune - If good, take with you for good fortune. If negative, tie to a tree or wire. This is believed to help avoid the bad luck coming home with you.
8. One last bow - Take a bow at the main gates as a final gesture of gratitude before leaving.
