Though dress for formal events varied significantly at European courts, one thing remained constant. For women at court the amount of decoration, and length of her train was an instant connotation of her rank and of her consequence there.
From both the length of the train and depth of the embroideries on his court costume from 1845 from Portugal, this was a garment worn by a lady of the highest station. Black was a color that had to be achieved through multiple dye baths to reach the desired depth of hue this has. The silk satin has been embroidered over almost all of its surface in gold work meaning that teams of embroiderers were employed to make this garment a reality over months of time.
