2021, 2022, 2023, 2024... a lot of years passed!

A lot happened, and changed where dreams became different! I put aside my photography after finding out I was pregnant in 2021 and giving birth to my handsome son in 2022!

We moved off the island back to my home roads in Pictou County, Nova Scotia!

A lot of changes but with lots of dreams and hopes. I've been on the fence since we moved on what I should do. I love hearing your stories and seeing your smiles! I worked with a lot of great people, models and friends! I'm not ready to say goodbye!

Coming back soon with a fresh start!

Love Mikki (Makayla) 📸🩵

This is deep 💔

Mom doesn’t exist in photos.

She just doesn’t.

She’s either the one taking the picture, or someone was about to take it, but newborn cries filled the room and her baby needed to be fed but one of her children needed to use the bathroom and she rushed him out of the pool, sopping wet and cold.

And maybe she doesn't want to be in the photo because she "hates" the way she looks in her swimsuit right now.

Or she deletes it because it’s a “terrible picture.” One where she’s at the right angle, where she has three chins and a muffin top stomach.

But pictures aren’t supposed to capture perfection,
they’re supposed to capture real moments.

Moments we want our children to see when they’re looking back on their childhood summer memories,
so they know we were there together, baking cookies on a day that’s too hot to go outside, swimming in the pool, laughing, smiling and enjoying each other’s company.

We show up everywhere for our children but it's time we're more intentional about showing up in photos this summer.

Because it does matter.

We won’t always be with them but that photo

Midlife women, get in the picture already.

This is the message I posted last Christmas after receiving a deeply moving text in the quiet, holy hours of Christmas Eve when everyone - except for us Midlife women - was tucked snugly in their beds.

And, if I’m honest, that one text stayed with me in a gentle, almost haunting whisper, all year long.

Midlife women, get in the pictures.

Get in the pictures with your people.

Get in the picture this Christmas.

Yes, you who will have the Christmas Day bedhead. And you who won’t have showered. And you who are already sporting undisguised bags under your eyes.

Get in the picture already.

You whose kitchen will be an unmitigated wreck until the company comes and goes next week.

You whose floor is already littered with paper and tape slivers, and you whose body is over fed, over-stimulated and maybe even over all of it already.

Get in the picture and do it now.

You see, that picture isn’t for you.

It’s for your loved ones. And it’s for remembering.

Last Christmas Eve, just before midnight on an unseasonably cold winter night so frigid that it caused rolling blackouts, I received an unexpected message from someone in my community.

This someone happens to coach hundreds of our most promising young people, including my very own daughter. He is not my typical demographic being a twenty-something and a dude, and I was and am deeply moved by his words, and also by the fact he actually reads mine.

And here’s the punchline. Last Christmas was his first Christmas without his Mom, and his heart was cracked wide open.

He was remembering the magic of the previous Christmas, the last Christmas he shared with his late mother, and he was looking through a thousand happy photos of that day.

Not a single one included his Mom.

Friends, get in the picture already.

Like so many of us Midlifers, this gentleman’s Mom shied away from the living room photos. She was self-conscious about the way she looked in pictures, and her children, who found her beautiful and enjoyed her loveliness inside and out, respected her wishes.

“Whitney,” the Coach began, “I think so many women feel like my Mom felt about pictures. And OH HOW I WISH I HAD A CHRISTMAS PICTURE WITH MY MOM.”

He continued, “I don’t think I’m the right person to tell them, but I thought about you and your writing. Women need to know! TAKE THE PICTURE ALREADY!”

Friends, this grieving son is EXACTLY the right person to speak to us Midlife moms. He is all of our children, and we should listen closely and get in the picture already.

Midlife women, get in the picture already.

For your loved ones. And for remembering.

I thought about these words all morning last Christmas amidst the happy chaos, and I didn’t turn my girl away when she caught me napping in my post-Christmas exhaustion, antlers and all.

Merry Christmas to each of us who celebrate.

Especially the grieving among us.

Get. In. The. Picture. Already.

And thank you to the brave, young man who boldly reached out on a cold Christmas Eve. Your mother still loves you very much, even now - especially now - from the Great Beyond.

Smile

The way a picture captures a moment forever makes me smile. I've loved photography for years and that love has only grown through my education at Holland College in the Photography and Digital Imaging program and as I registered my business Mikki D's Photography. There's something about looking at my photos and seeing memories I've shared with people or even made by myself. There's an even greater love when it comes to capturing memories for other people. When I go to photo shoots I love how excited people get and I love getting messages an hour later saying, "I can't wait to see the previews!" There's something about someone's face lighting up when they see a photo of their family laughing and for a moment nothing else matters because they were happy together.Another favorite thing is capturing a moment where a child is so full of life and knowing in just a year that child is going to look so different but because they have pictures they will forever remember the sweet child smiling in the photo I took.I feel honored families trust me to take photos of loved ones as well as their special days such as prom, graduation, birthday parties and that they have shared them with friends and family. I've even been lucky enough to work with modeling agency's and the fashion industry. For me It's about creating unique images that capture the emotions of that moment.
