Happy Valentine's day!

🚨Breaking News: In a victory for transgender youth, their families, and their medical providers, a federal district court today issued a temporary restraining order blocking enforcement of a Trump administration executive order attempting to shut down access nationwide to gender-affirming medical care for transgender people under 19. The decision by Judge Brendan Hurson was issued from the bench with a written order to come soon.

This short, animated video by the Government of British Columbia captures a powerful message about the transformative work happening in British Columbia (B.C.) schools: to create spaces where every student feels safe, valued, and celebrated for who they are.

It shines a light on how embracing diversity—whether in culture, religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ability—directly impacts the lives of students and their families.

This work is about students feel seen and supported every single day, in their schools and in their communities. It’s about giving families the reassurance that their children can thrive in environments where inclusion is not just an idea but a practice that empowers all learners to succeed.

The video is an inspiring reminder of B.C.'s commitment to equity and inclusion.

It’s a testament to the educators, administrators, and communities working tirelessly to ensure schools are places where harmful stereotypes are broken down, barriers to learning are dismantled, and every child’s potential is unlocked.

For families, this means knowing their children are part of a school system that equips them with not only academic skills but also empathy, resilience, and the ability to embrace diversity in all its forms.

By spotlighting these values and practices, the video encapsulates the tangible impacts these efforts have on fostering a new generation of compassionate and inclusive citizens. This work doesn’t just change lives within schools—it ripples out to strengthen entire communities.

For more information about these transformative efforts, you can explore B.C.'s resources on diversity and inclusion here: BC Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives.

This weekend, something really special happened.

An incredible team of volunteers at Cottonwood Centre created a calm, welcoming space for kids and families who needed a quieter, gentler way to visit Santa—no loud noise, no bright lights, just a space where everyone could feel comfortable.

Organizing this event alongside this team reminded me of what’s possible when we work together: real inclusion and meaningful support.

As a proud trans man and a community advocate, this event reflects what I believe in: creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. It’s a small act, but these moments matter. They show how we can lead with empathy and build a community that truly works for everyone.

Thank you to every volunteer, every family who attended, and to the Cottonwood Centre for helping bring this vision to life. Together, we make these moments happen.

Let’s keep working toward a more inclusive Chilliwack—where no one is left out of the joy and celebration.

Dan Coulters inspiration and the affect he had will remain in the heart of everyone in Chilliwack forever.

"The Chilliwack School District Board of Education, along with District staff, are deeply saddened by the passing of former MLA and school trustee Dan Coulter. Dan was a steadfast advocate for public education, equity and inclusion, and workers’ rights. He cared deeply about the human spirit.

Dan served on the Chilliwack Board of Education from 2013 to 2020, when he was elected as an MLA for Chilliwack. He was Board Chair from 2018 to 2020.

Dan reflected the best of what it is to work in service to community by striving to make the world better for others. He valued people and had an ability to make those around him feel seen, even in a crowd.

He had a capacity to connect an abstract discussion in a boardroom to the people impacted. His sense of social justice inspired those around him.

Dan held strong connections throughout the District and the community. On behalf of the Board of Education, I’d like to express my condolences to Dan’s family and friends, and to everyone who mourns alongside us. We’ll continue to be inspired by his warmth, compassion, and kindness. "

I’m deeply honored to have been chosen for Vice-Chair of the Chilliwack Board of Education.

Thank you, Trustee Reid for putting my name forward and believing in my ability to serve in this role (and for snapping this historical photo!)

Congratulations to Trustee David Swankey for earning the trust of our colleagues for the Chair position.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Trustee Willow Reichelt and Trustee Carin Bondar for serving as Chair and Vice-Chair over the past two terms.

You've shown us all what it means to be strong and thoughtful leaders who stand up for all people, even in the face of incredible adversity. Your unwavering commitment to high-quality and inclusive public education is truly commendable. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have learned from your leadership and grown under your guidance.

As I step into this role, I carry a deep sense of responsibility to continue the positive momentum we’ve built as a team. Leadership is never a solo effort—it’s about collaboration, respect, and amplifying the unique strengths each of us brings to the table.

This opportunity also allows me to support our new Chair in fostering a strong, united Board that prioritizes collaboration, inclusion, representation, and equity.

For me, this role is not just about leadership; it’s about being a visible representative for the students, staff, and families in our community who are like me - people who have often been unseen or unheard.

When Chilliwack made history by electing a trans person to the school board, it sent a powerful message about who we are as a community—one that values progress and the courage to lead by example.

Now, Chilliwack continues to build on that legacy by showing what representation and equity in leadership can achieve.

I am ready to work hard, to listen, and to be a steady support for this Board, our community, and the underrepresented voices who need to know they matter. Thank you for trusting me with this opportunity.

Let’s continue moving forward—together.

"All that talk about kids today not caring about movies hasn’t made its way to Chilliwack, British Columbia, where this weekend’s Chilliwack Independent Film Festival will include “Rat King,” an eerie psychological study made by local students.

The film is the product of a raise-all-boats atmosphere in Chilliwack, a community of about 100,000 where the festival, local filmmakers, students, and even the nearby Vancouver Film School all contribute to each other’s success.

“Rat King” writer-director Ayush Senanayake says growing up in a film-forward environment — which included taking public school film classes throughout his teens — has made him very certain of his career path.

“I intend only to make films in my life. I want to create and contribute to this massive medium like it’s the only thing I truly know and love, because it is,” Senanayake, 17, tells MovieMaker.

Yes, of course many teens are captivated by social media, not making atmospheric Lynchian thrillers like “Rat King.” But many of those TikTok-addicted teens haven’t had the kinds of opportunities offered to students at GW Graham Secondary in Chilliwack."

I can't even! I got to meet Fae Johnstone! Not only is she an incredible leader with Momentum Canada, driving transformative work for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, but she’s also someone who’s faced adversity with such courage and determination.

You might remember Fae being featured on Hershey’s special “HER for SHE” chocolate bar for International Women’s Day. Hershey’s aimed to celebrate women’s achievements and inclusivity by spotlighting inspiring leaders like Fae. Of course, there was backlash because Fae is a proud transgender woman—and that only highlights just how far we still have to go in creating a truly inclusive society.

But here’s the thing: Hershey’s stood by her. And Fae, in her ever-resilient way, used that moment to shine even brighter, advocating for all women and continuing her fight for equity and justice.

Talking with Fae about our shared work and vision for a better future was a highlight I won’t soon forget. It’s people like her who remind me why we keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges. Let’s keep building, learning, and creating space for everyone to thrive.
