The second public open house to develop a potential concept for the future of the Langley Events Centre was on October 29th. A wide area of Willoughby residents were notified, with many residents coming by to give their feedback. Great to see.

The Township of Langley taxpayers own 15 acres or so of undeveloped lands, mostly north of the Langley Events Centre. Before moving forward any further, it's important we get it right.

The future of the Langley Centre has been debated and considered by Council for years now. However, that discussion (and potential land deals) was at Closed Council meetings, away from the public eye. No more. On such a critical public asset, all residents and taxpayers deserves to have input, and be consulted with.

The proposed concept includes the new ice and dry arenas under construction. It adds housing, underground parking, retail and restaurant destinations, a new central plaza, concert hall, office spaces, and a hotel and convention centre. It's all anchored by future Bus Rapid Transit on 200 Street. BRT will directly connect the LEC to the upcoming Willowbrook SkyTrain Station, set to be finished in 2030.

📋 Here's our top-10 list of what can be done in your garden this Nov:

1. Cut back fading hardy perennials leaving 2-3” of stem above ground level. Leave some seed heads for the birds.

2. Test soil ph of garden beds. Add lime to vegetable beds if needed. Most vegetables grow best in a ph of 5.5-6.5.

3. Last chance to plant Garlic. Garlic should be in the ground by mid-Nov. Add Sea Soil or manure to garden beds before planting and add gypsum to strengthen the flavour of your garlic.

4. Plant spring-blooming bulbs. Nighttime temperatures have dropped and soil temperatures are cooling down. Now is the time to plant bulbs before the ground freezes. Add Gardenpro bulb food to garden soils to increase the amount of blooms and lifespan of your bulbs.

5. Lime lawns. Fall is the most important time to lime your lawn. Lime raises the soil ph and slows moss growth over the wet winter months.

6. Apply dormant spray to roses, fruit trees, and dogwood trees after the leaves fall off. Ideally, you want to spray plants twice between the end of Nov. and the middle of Feb. Spray on a dry day when it is not windy and temperatures are above freezing for at least 6 hours.

7. Collect leaves to add to the compost pile or save them to be used as a mulch to protect plants in cold weather.

8. W**d garden beds. This is your last cleanup for the season. Removing weeds now will make spring cleanup much easier.

9. Mulch garden beds. Apply Sea Soil or manure to garden beds to protect roots of plants from freezing and revitalize garden soil. An application of GardenPro granular kelp will improve overall winter hardiness.

10. Protect crops. Be prepared for cold weather. Shelter overwintering vegetables and tender plants with crop cover fabric when cold weather arrives.

Over recent years, it has become clear that small businesses have not received the same level of relief, support or opportunity as large retailers.

A large percentage of BC’s small business community have been left to manage ongoing stress and debt while trying to stay afloat. Many have even had to resort to making the difficult decision of closing for good.

With small businesses being such a significant contributor to the local economy and at the heart of many of our communities, these challenges and barriers have a negative impact not only on businesses, but also on us as British Columbian consumers.

As we move towards the holidays, we encourage you to stay vocal for local and use your purchasing power to support the businesses who need and are deserving of your support!
