For Immediate Release

The National Campus and Community Radio Association (NCRA) and Farm Radio International (FRI) host a World Radio Day event in Ottawa to celebrate the importance of radio.

The theme for this year’s World Radio Day is A Century Informing, Entertaining and Educating.

OTTAWA, ON.- January 15th, 2024 - On February 13th, people worldwide will celebrate World Radio Day. Whether you listen to it in your car, at home, on your mobile phones, at work, we can all agree that radio continues to play an essential part in everyday lives. We rely on it to learn what is happening in our communities, when disaster strikes, to educate us on important topics or to feel better connected to the world around us. And while radio is seeing some declines with station closures, it’s seeing a rise across sub-Saharan Africa, where rural people rely on it for their lives and livelihoods.

To celebrate, the NCRA/ANREC and FRI are partnering to get people to listen to the radio on February 13th. Whether it’s your favourite local radio station, campus radio, public broadcast, or a special program that will be streamed live that day, we want as many people as possible to tune in to show that audio continues to impact our everyday lives.

NCRA/ANREC and FRI will also partner with CKCU-FM to host a live broadcast that can syndicated. There, you will hear from broadcasters past and present and from around the world talking about the importance of radio.

“In Canada, campus, community and Indigenous not-for-profit radio reaches over 75% of Canadians, providing invaluable local news, information and entertainment in spaces where the local voice is often not heard. It fosters music growth, disseminating verifiable information with journalistic integrity and provides opportunities for organizations and companies to inform their community through a free-to-access medium,” says Barry Rooke, Executive Director for the NCRA/ANREC

“In sub-Saharan Africa, radio is the world’s most accessible and popular communication service. When combined with mobile phones, which allow farmers to share their own stories on the airwaves, it brings lasting change for some of the world’s most vulnerable people—small-scale farmers in rural Africa,” says Kevin Perkins, Executive Director of Farm Radio International. “By sharing knowledge, amplifying farmers’ voices, and supporting better practices, audio has the power to reduce food insecurity, improve health and nutrition, and plant the seeds for long-term positive change.”

Last year, Farm Radio International directly reached an estimated 24.1 million people with life-changing audio services over the airwaves, enabling about 5 million to make a positive change.

This live broadcast will take place on February 13th, 2024, at a morning event in downtown Ottawa. Details will be released shortly, including ways to participate as an NCRA/ANREC member station.

About NCRA/ANREC
The National Campus and Community Radio Association/L’Association nationale des radios étudiantes et communautaires (“NCRA/ANREC”) is a not-for-profit national association working to recognize, support, and encourage volunteer-based, non-profit, public-access campus, community and native radio broadcasters in Canada. We provide advice and advocacy for individual campus and community (“c/c”) stations and conduct lobbying and policy development initiatives with a view to advancing the role and increasing the effectiveness of our sector. The NCRA/ANREC currently has 129 member stations.

About FRI

Farm Radio International is an award-winning Canadian communications-for-development organization that harnesses the power of radio and partnerships to serve African farming families and communities. By working with existing radio stations across Africa, we reach tens of millions of small-scale farmers with life-changing information and provide opportunities for their voices to be heard. Visit www.farmradio.org to learn how radio is seeding change.

The event is set to take place on February 13th in the morning for World Radio Day.

Absolutely thrilled to announce CFRC is co-presenting the upcoming Godspeed You! Black Emperor show opening this year's ! Show details below and be sure to visit https://kingcanfilmfest.com/ to get your festival passes and film tickets for a great lineup screening !!

💥 Canadian post-rock band GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR announced as our special event opening night 💥

Godspeed delivers sense-rattling wall-of-sound performances, featuring as many as 14 performers and several 16mm film projectors.

With ambient soundscapes, chaotic crescendos, and mainly instrumental songs, GY!BE are perhaps best known for their song ‘East Hastings’ which was the main song used in the 2002 film 28 Days Later.

Through extensive touring, the band has gained a reputation for mesmerising live shows marked by orchestral dynamics, epic rock power and clunky, beautiful film loops.

Godspeed includes experimental filmmaker Karl Lemieux, the band’s primary creator (and projectionist) of 16mm film footage and loops; an array of analog film projectors remains central to GY!BE’s live performances.

When: Wednesday, February 28
WHERE: Kingston Grand Theatre
TIME: 7 pm doors, 8 pm show

Please note: tickets are only available through the Kingston Grand Theatre Box Office and are not available as a selection on a Festival Pass.

CFRC 101.9 FM is thrilled to announce the launch of our 2024 Airwave YGK Artist Residencies! Our first Artist-in-Residence is local artist David Parker

On February 2nd 2024 beginning at 7 PM, David will offer an electro-acoustic composition workshop using magnetic tape. Come learn how to create audio art, sound and musical compositions using cassette tape loops. This workshop will include an artist talk, a hands-on discussion and exploration of different electronic music composition tools including magnetic tape, a chance to do a group improvisation, and a chance to cut and create your very own tape loop. No experience required.

Following this two-hour workshop, David will also perform live on air from CFRC's studios using content created by workshop participants.

Participants are asked to bring one or more of the following: a field recording (digital file); an electric or acoustic musical instrument; and a tape cassette that can be destroyed. CFRC will also provide pre-recorded cassette tapes for participants that do not have one. Participants can also expect to share scissors and tape during the creation of tape loops. CFRC will provide hand sanitizer. If you prefer to use your own scissors and tape, please bring it along.

Cost: $5-10 or pay what you can. No one will be turned away for lack of funds! You can pay the fee here: https://cfrc.ca/merchandise/cfrc-airwave-ygk-artist-in-residence-workshop-fee. Or you can bring cash. Or just yourself and a pal :D

💥 Makers Meetup Jan 9, 4-6pm @ Broom Factory💥

Makers Meetups are so much fun!

We had two in the last part of 2023, and it's time for another one to welcome 2024!

The last twelve months were tough, and the new year offers a chance for a renewal. A rebirth, and re-sparking of creative ideas.

Open to all creative folks, whether you're working in a creative industry or not!

There's nothing more invigorating than sharing the seeds of an idea with other folks, and seeing their eyes light up in admiration and encouragement for you.

And honestly? You don't even have to have creative ideas right at this moment to get the most out of Makers Meetup.

Because the people energy in the room is enough to bring you joy. Plus, ideas are sparked just by being there! We promise you'll enjoy it.

So come on down to the Broom Factory (305 Rideau St) this Tuesday 4-6pm, and enjoy some chit chat.

We hope to see you there!

This is a FREE event, and all are welcome. The venue is wheelchair accessible, with accessible washrooms. Plenty of free parking is available in the area.

Kindly RSVP 🙏 on our website kingcanfilmfest.com -> year round -> events
