A year ago this week we lost Matthew Perry, ten years ago, Robin Williams; both comedians made us laugh and cry. Each had mental health issues, coped with meds and both lost their battles in different ways. How many others, not so funny, famous, or rich, face the same struggles and will win or lose their battles, every day?
Someone ends their life in this world every 45 seconds. Millions more die of overdoses and addiction, both accidental or on purpose. Others choose to leave in less obvious ways, "death by vehicle, cop, needle, bottle, pills, poverty or drowning". Few listen, and fewer even care. Do you?
If someone WAS drowning, would you jump in and save them, or stand by and watch them die? Mental illness IS drowning, recognize it!
Sadly, most STILL ignore the signs, and the struggles and are SO consumed with their own daily lives, goals, and careers, that they are immune to the needs of others. I believe there are billions of people SO desensitized by the hurt, pain, and need of others, they are now immune to the struggles others go through. Social media offers light, funny, and positive images and videos, why bother with the negative s**t people go through?
Want proof? Funny cat videos get more views than su***de prevention videos—golf tips, road rage, or how to build a Lego or Fortnight castle. Vanity posts with endless selfies on social media, often disguised as "branding" on LinkedIn and Facebook, get more likes than a post about a woman murdered by her partner.
As an online community, and a business platform. we SUCK at helping and caring for others to be honest. I see it daily on Facebook and elsewhere. People write to me daily to say "they support" what we do, but in reality, they confuse support with admiration; two different things.
Unless and until we care more about others, than we do about our own lives, we will never change. Men will still beat, abuse, and kill women and children because our laws do not fully protect them. Laws written and carried by mostly male politicians, cops, guards, and judges, it is in our DNA.
People like Matthew and Robin and millions of others will die alone; their last thoughts, wondering, why no one truly cared enough to help when they had the chance. Who do YOU know, today, who needs your help? Reach out, call, or visit them. NOW!
When you are done, please see our projects, such as these two on bringing awareness to su***de prevention. True, not as funny as a cat video, but more important to you and the lives of those you know and love.
I know! I WAS there! I WAS suicidal. I discovered a tool to keep myself alive, so I could share it with others. See it here.
