In this week’s podcast episode, we sit down with Dr. Carlesso, currently an educator at the school of rehabilitation science at McMaster Univeristy. We dive into her extensive background in physiotherapy and her unique career journey along the way related to clinical works as a physiotherapist, an educator, and a researcher regarding osteoarhtirsitis and chronic pain. We had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Jennifer William, who is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto and an adjunct lecturer for the course S*x, Gender and Health in the Health Sciences Program at McMaster University. Dr. William shared her perspectives on finding one’s passion and navigating research related to the social and health sciences. We also had the opportunity to learn about how we can more inclusively approach the intersection of s*x and gender with health in the clinical setting. Hi everyone!! Are you interested in sharing perspectives on diverse health care fields and educating Undergrads on how to get involved? The Healthcare Prospectives team is hiring executive members for 2023-2024!

Healthcare Prospectives is an initiative that aims to provide an accessible platform through which students can explore and learn about different fields within healthcare and the importance of interdisciplinary care through hearing the stories and advice of a diversity of healthcare professionals. Through our interviews we hope to bring light to the skills experienced professionals think students could build when considering a career in healthcare, to examine the challenging journey to working in this field, and to help equip students with the tools to better navigate and understand the healthcare system. This week, we talked to Andrew Sweetnam, a PhD student in the Social Gerontology Program at McMaster University and a community development worker at Compass Community Health Center in Hamilton, ON. In both his research and career pursuits, he has a strong interest in food security and the social determinants of health. He tells us about his unique educational and career journey which started in kinesiology and led to a passion for enhancing food security while bringing in his perspectives on health systems. In this podcast we sit down with Patrick Deluca, an expert in geographical information systems (GIS) with interests in air quality monitoring, modelling and mapping, regional variations in health quality and healthcare, and more. Patrick is also an instructor at McMaster University. He tells us about his journey on choosing GIS as a career path while sharing valuable lessons on what he learnt along the way.
