“Near the end of the retrospective is Midden (2024), a heap of mussel shells made from strips of plastic wrappers. The obvious point is perhaps this: as filter-feeders, mussels are exposed to whatever’s in the water, including microplastics; Whitten’s shells are an object lesson that humans are woven into the food web. But consider the title. “Midden” is an archeological term for ancient refuse piles, often filled with animal bones and mollusk shells; humans may have always thrown things away. So discarding itself is perhaps not the issue.”

📣 ONLINE ARTICLE 📣

"Throughout the exhibition, Jefferies continues to build her relationship with the sea as an archive that might hold memories and dreams of transfeminine and s*x worker bodies. Honouring, tending to, and caring for this relationship, Jefferies confronts the ways that a colonial imaginary has shaped historical narratives of place and belonging." - Kate Lahey

"Séamus Gallagher knows better than most how cringeworthy it can feel to call yourself an artist and how imposter syndrome can creep in when that’s the reply to a stranger’s asking what you do. But when I ask them the moment they knew for sure they were an artist, they don’t miss a beat delivering a time and date: Moncton, New Brunswick, 2011."

"The exhibition is greatly enhanced by the accompanying documentary, Mountains of Wonder, created by Matt Brown. The short film features interviews with some of Hooper’s closest friends and family, curator Ash, and of course the artist herself, to tell a beautiful story of a life lived wholly in service of art and creativity."
