Halifax Regional Municipality declares local state of emergency

News release Posted: May 28, 2023 - 11:05 pm

Effective 11 p.m. tonight, Mayor Mike Savage and Regional Council have declared a local state of emergency in the communities affected by the fires. The local state of emergency will be in effect for seven days, unless otherwise lifted or extended.

Emergency responders are working around the clock to keep people safe and reduce the threats posed by the fires in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains areas. Residents are urged to follow the directives of emergency responders.

Under the Emergency Management Act, declaring a state of local emergency is a legal mechanism that provides the municipal government with a higher level of intergovernmental coordination, access to emergency discretionary funds, the ability to mobilize additional supports, organizations and businesses to support evacuated residents.

The municipality will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves. The most up-to-date information is available at halifax.ca/fire and on Twitter.

HRFE WERE ON THE SCENE OF A SMALL KITCHEN FIRE ON PRINCESS MARGARET BOULEVARD IN DARTMOUTH LAST NIGHT FEBRUARY 25,2023.

THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED AND EXTINGUISHED BEFORE FIREFIGHTER ARRIVED.

Fire at a mobile home trailer park closes Tanager Street off for several hours on February 9, 2023

New Glasgow Regional Police news release

On Thursday February 9, 2023 at approximately 12:50 p.m. just after noon, New Glasgow Fire Department and New Glasgow Regional Police and Nova Scotia Power responded to a structure fire at a mobile home trailer park on Tanager Street,New Glasgow.

Tanager Street was closed for several hours in both directions as fire crews attended the fire.

No one was injured as a result of the fire and a 78-year-old female and an 18-year-old female escaped the fire without injury.

The mobile home was completely destroyed.

“The preliminary investigation has determined that the fire is non-suspicious and investigators will continue to determine possible causes”, said Fire Chief Ross White of the New Glasgow Fire Department.

The Nova Scotia RCMP is asking for public assistance to help locate 65 year old Carol Marisett of Walton.

Marisett is described as Indigenous, 5 feet 8 inches tall with black and grey hair. She was reported missing earlier today from 4234 Walton Woods Road in Walton.

Local residents, please check your property. If seen, call 9-1-1 or local police.

Plug space heaters directly into the wall outlet.

Powers strips are not designed to handle the high current flow required by a space heater and can overheat causing a fire.

Man killed in house fire last night in Dartmouth

A man has been killed in a house fire in Dartmouth, N.S.

Nine units with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency responded to the home in the 300 block of Waverley Road around 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Geoff Garber, the acting fire chief of District 3, released that one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was in his 50s.

No other details about the victim have been released.

No one else was injured in the fire, which took crews about two hours to extinguish.

Fire investigators remained on scene until about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
