When Nelly Nkosi was asked why she started wearing her traditional headdress, she replied, “Now that I do not have to use my head to carry buckets of water, I can use it to wear my headdress!”

Nelly is from the town of Roosboom in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. With funding from the Roll a Hippo Foundation, she was one of 300 marginalized women who received a Survival Garden Kit and specialized training on how to start a homestead garden last December. Nelly was so awestruck by the sheer power of the hippo water roller to improve the well being of her community, that she mobilized 200 of her neighbors who are now also eager to embrace the garden kits and training in food security.

In conjunction with Rotary Clubs in Canada, the USA and South Africa, the Roll a Hippo Foundation has launched a campaign to raise the $40,000 project costs. Please donate now and help Nelly bring her vision of transformation to her community.

Empowering Women Through Home Gardens...

A heart-felt thank you to all the Rotary clubs and individuals who took part in the "Rotary District 5080 Hippo Roller Challenge" that fundraised over $28,000 which will deliver 190 hippo rollers to impoverished women in rural South Africa.

The Rotary Club of Winnipeg complemented these donations by providing additional funds for all the “survival garden kit components” to accompany each of the hippo rollers.

The first delivery of 40 Survival Garden Kits was made to Hillcrest Aids Center Trust in KwaZulu-Natal. Each woman received a hippo water roller, gardening tools, seedlings, compost, and a how-to gardening manual.

They also took part in a training workshop that included a demonstration garden, nutrition, healthy eating habits, and food security. The Rotary Club of Hillcrest, SA handled all the distribution logistics.

The hippo water roller, with its large drum capacity, frees women from the daily chore of hauling water for their households. Fewer trips to collect water means women can spend their time on more productive educational and economic endeavors.
