THE GREAT FIRE OF 1906

Sparked by the Madden family’s land clearance slash-burn in the area of what is now Leek Road in Roberts Creek, the fire spread at least five miles up Mount Elphinstone, moving with terrifying speed and a searing heat to consume everything in its path. Conditions were ideal. An unusually dry Spring left underbrush tinder-dry, and a strong south-westerly wind seeded sparks from that “backyard burn” onto the surrounding dry grass, and then licked across to the bordering brush.

Results are consistent with normal hearing bilaterally. Potentially a case of selective hearing.

It's such an honor to share the incredible stories and history of the Sunshine Coast. Enjoy reading this one!

One of the most venerable theatre societies,
Driftwood Players, sets the standard for
production values – even to the point of creating
a prime performance venue out of a deteriorating
maintenance shed. Gibsons Heritage Playhouse
now sits on nicely landscaped grounds at “Heritage
Corner” – where the junction of Gibsons Way, North
Road and School Road is anchored by Gibsons
Heritage School (built: 1911), St. Bartholomew’s
Anglican Church (1892) and the Playhouse
(originally constructed during the early days of the
Depression as the Howe Sound Women’s Institute
Hall). From its grand opening for a community
dance in 1929 to its current incarnation, the
building’s interior has morphed from a hall to a
school annex, a gymnasium, a maintenance shed,
and finally an intimate venue for live performances,
lectures, film screenings, readings, dance recitals,
and community events

ElderDog Canada Sunshine Coast they assist and support older adults in the care and well-being of their canine companions;
Provide care and companionship for older dogs whose lives have been disrupted due to illness or passing of their human companion.

The work of ElderDog is only made possible by the work of dedicated volunteers who donate their valuable time and skills. ElderDog volunteers range widely in age, background, experience, time commitment, and volunteer activity.

Whether a member of a community youth organization partnering with ElderDog or a community elder helping other elders, ElderDog volunteers believe in the power and possibilities of dog-human companionship.

2023-04-24 In the May 2021 Boot Tales added the Higgelty Piggelty history articles to the monthly newsletter. Maypole Dancing and Gumboot Games was the subject of the first article. May Day in Roberts Creek has been celebrated off and on throughout the years. From 1991 to 1995 residents gathered at Flume Picnic Site to dance around May Poles. The poles were decorated with indigenous plant crowns; the dancers wore spring flowers in their hair; and the musicians accompanied the dancers whose ages spanned eight decades. On May 5th, 1991, Peter Roy and Jeanette Moen announced the newly created Independent Nation of Roberts Creek, The Gumboot Nation, during the festivities.
Attendees got to catch up with each other on the lawns and at the beach; or they could play Gumboot Toss or Gumboot Bowling. After the 1993-05-02 Community photo, residents walked from the Roberts Creek Community Hall down to Flume Picnic Site to continue the spring event, marking the halfway point between spring equinox and summer solstice.
The May Poles’ patterns were Higgelty Piggelty and made everyone giggle at the woven outcomes. Undoing the pattern was even funnier. Donna Balma, a Creek artist who was in an art exhibition at BC House in Norwich, Norfolk, UK, at the time, sent a telegram from in Norwich, congratulating the community on the new nation, and she managed to return in time home to celebrate at the event too. The playful spirit of the May Days confirmed the National slogan: The Nation of Roberts Creek – We are amused.
