Ever wondered what goes into a professional mix?
Here’s my full process, step by step.
I start by importing my mix template, which handles all the routing, color coding, and basic panning. This allows me to focus on the creative side of mixing without getting lost in setup.
From there, I get a balance by adjusting the faders—no plugins yet. If a song doesn’t sound good at this stage, there is only so much a mixer can do.
Once I have a solid foundation, I shape the mix with EQ to remove problem frequencies and create space for everything to sit together. I then add compression to glue the elements together, making sure everything feels tight.
Next, I introduce reverb and effects to create depth and emotion, and to create the atmosphere that the artist is looking for.
Next, I automate volumes and effect so each element shines when it needs to and supports the others when it’s their time to shine.
I’ll also add a quick mastering compression to see how the mix might sound when it’s finalized.
After that, I check how the mix sounds on different speakers—whether in my headphones or car speakers—just to make sure it translates well everywhere.
I’ll also revisit the reference tracks provided by the artist and get their feedback to make sure I’m capturing their vision.
Finally, I work closely with the artist to fine-tune the mix until we’re both 100% satisfied with the final product.
