One of the most amazing things about being a long-standing local charity is the community bonds. We have volunteers and supporters who have been a critical part of our success since 1992.

Here’s a great example: Jamie has been involved with for decades. He was a major reason BBBX acquired the Covert Street property, and many other important contributions.

This week, Jamie came in a shared his amazing time-piece knowledge with us. We had a LOT of donated watches stored up for him!

He went through and sorted them, found amazing treasures and even made some repairs.

Thanks to his help, there is a huge batch of watches heading out to both 41 King St. E., and 66 King St. E.
in Cobourg. You will find beautiful, working, watch-treasures at 42 King St E. At 66 King St E you’ll find bags of 10 watches for $10.

(There are lots of other treasures at both shops, as usual. And both shops are open seven days a week from 10 AM till 4 PM).

This is just one fun example of the Blue Box family who have supported our efforts through this challenging era, and decades before. We are so grateful for everyone in our community who work with us, volunteer with us, shop with us and support us in all ways.

Thank you, Jamie. 💙

The Town of Cobourg’s Community Services Division invites all community members to attend the Waterfront Wisdom Pathway unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 10 a.m.

The Waterfront Wisdom Pathway is a collection of 26 banners created by local Indigenous artists Rick Beaver and Koren Smoke of Alderville First Nation. The banners, displayed on the lampposts along the Cobourg waterfront, bring vibrant expressions of storytelling, tradition, and remind us of our connections to the land. The artists selected the harbourfront location due to the significance of water to Indigenous culture.

“We are thrilled to share the completion of this artwork with the community,” says Jackie Chapman-Davis, Town of Cobourg’s Manager of Culture, Events & Tourism. “These beautiful and meaningful banners will provide artistic storytelling of Cobourg’s unique connection to the land.”

Artists have taken different approaches to their designs of the banners, lending variety to the viewers experience as they walk along the path. Koren Smoke has assumed the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers, Respect, Love, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility, and Truth. Rick Beaver’s pieces showcase themes of land and water creatures, plants and flowers, and features the very real connection to the Indigenous community and its art forms.

Unveiling Ceremony
The community is invited to the Cobourg Marina (103 Third Street) on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 10 a.m. for a special unveiling ceremony. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the talented artists behind this project and participate in a guided tour of each piece of art. The story walk from the Marina to the east end of the boardwalk will begin with the banner entitled “All My Relations,” symbolizing the interconnectedness of all beings.

About the Artists
Rick Beaver, A Michi Saagig Nishnaabeg residing on Alderville First Nation, Rick Beaver brings 45 years of professional artistry coupled with a background in trained wildlife biology. His unique perspective on humanity's relationship with the land enriches the Waterfront Wisdom Pathway. He brings a unique perspective on humanity’s relationship with the land and the life it supports. He continues to teach, consult and advise in the areas of art, culture and the environment in retirement.

Koren Smoke ᓲᓐᑭᑌᐦᐁᑴ Hailing from Alderville First Nation, Koren Smoke, also known as Koren George, infuses her artwork with the traditions and culture of her ancestors. A passionate advocate for Indigenous art and culture, Koren inspires others to explore their identity and voice through her work. Let's show some Downtown & Northumberland PRIDE

Since 2017, the Alderville Black Oak Savanna team has been working to restore Sandercock Creek. Efforts to create a more robust buffer between the creek and surrounding farmland, enhance stream morphology, and increase biodiversity have finally started to show signs of success, with fish sitings in the creek both last fall and this spring! Last week the team initiated fish surveys in the creek as part of the Stream to Shore project. 4 fish traps were set and although they each came out empty this time, surveying will continue at regular intervals throughout the season. We hope the ongoing stream restoration efforts will continue improving this cold water creek habitat, allowing it to become a prime habitat for diverse fish species and benthic invertebrates!

Thank you to everyone that shared their questions with me, I am going to ensure that they are asked on the air!
