Are you a Carnie or a CEO? šŸ˜¬

For one week of the year, a midway sets up shop down the street from my house, and thousands of people pile in to go on rides until the sun goes down.

It's weird to be so up close to it because there's a livestock component, so I can hear cows mooing occasionally and it smells like... agriculture when there's a stiff breeze.

Also, there's a near-constant sound of children screaming in terror from the rides.

Yesterday, I could hear a child yelling, "MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP!"

It got me thinking about how the fair comes to town, the carnies sell their tickets, entice people to throw a dart for a stuffie, and then leave before the dust has settled.

It's a whirlwind of excitement, but they're here one minute and gone the next.

Isnā€™t that how start-stop marketing can feel for your business?

One week you're all in, trying to draw people in with posts about your offers, and the next, you're gone, leaving your audience wondering where you went.

Itā€™s exhausting, itā€™s chaotic, and itā€™s not sustainable.

A fork in the road for LinkedIn growth is *sending* connection requests.

Most people sit back and wait for them to come in.

Or break a sweat creating content hoping it goes viral and leads to an influx of incoming connections.

Maybe they hold off on reaching out because they don't want to be intrusive.

One of the things I like BEST about marketing my business over here on LinkedIn is that I can be proactive in building a network/audience of people that I want to work with, learn from or network with.

In a real-life networking situation though?šŸ¤¢

Different story. I'll be by the table of cubed cheese, sweating slightly and waiting for someone to come to me.

Iā€™m a business owner who likes options.

Without options, Iā€™m waiting on people to refer me, reach out to me, think of me.

Itā€™s so passive. Not in the way people love to talk about passive income. More like in the ā€˜helplessā€™ way. Eww.

Your company doesn't pay you to drive traffic to their website.

You are right to share your company's messaging around their stability and reputation but when you only post articles that promote the company and not your own brand, you are leaning too heavily on corporate marketing.

People connect with other people, not faceless corporations. You need to be the main focus of your marketing.

Not the markets, not the products you sell, not the software you use, not even the strategies you use.

Instead, you want to leverage the company's marketing to help you build YOUR brand.

Here are the 3 biggest misses I see Financial Advisors make on LinkedIn. Do you make these mistakes?

(First of allā€¦ these are super common! Nothing wrong with you if you make these mistakes.

Second of allā€¦ itā€™s hard to know WHAT to do! When I was in the industry, I was convinced I could crack the code to getting HNW clients from social media marketing. We tried. Every. Thing. And got some leads but not HNW and not consistently. Corporate marketing wasā€¦ šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬ not helpful.)

Ok, here are the 3 biggest missteps I see advisors make and why social media isnā€™t generating results (AKA: leads)!

1. Only sharing industry related news.

2. Gatekeeping articles.

3. Thinking posting regularly is enough to get high networth clients.

Letā€™s dig in:

1. You already know youā€™re in the relationship business. If you only talked about retirement planning to the other parents in your kidā€™s soccer league, youā€™d turn everyone off. Same on social media.

2. I LOVE the idea of delivering value in exchange for someoneā€™s email address (thatā€™s a huge way I get quality leads for my clients) but a news article is not the ticket. Iā€™m willing to live debate anyone who feels Iā€™m wrong about this.

3. I WISH this was true! My job would be so much easier! But itā€™s not. You have to implement other modern digital marketing strategies AS WELL as a strong content strategy.

The most successful campaigns on LinkedIn have THIS in common:

They are hyper-focused...

šŸ”¦ ONE service at a time.
šŸ”¦ ONE call to action at a time.

I think about niching differently for LinkedIn.

When I say to pick one lane, that doesn't mean your efforts elsewhere have to be the same. That doesn't mean you don't offer different services to different markets. Heck, that doesn't even mean you only have one business.

For example: you're a Financial Consultant. You can work with anyone to do retirement planning, estate planning, insurance, mortgages, etc. But what if your marketing spoke to women business owners who had portfolios of at least $500,000 who were ready for retirement planning?

On LinkedIn ONE thing/market/service/goal at a time is so powerful. Everything points to it (headline, About, content, whom you connect with) and you will laser in on your goal.

You can change things up when you want to, it's not set in stone.

So, how do you know if you're not niched down and focused enough?

If you're not scared to hit post/publish on claiming that niche, you can likely drill down even deeper.
