✨ As Marlow Design marks its 10th anniversary this February, we sit down with Founder Marlow Marshall to reflect on his journey, the challenges he’s overcome, the stories he’s helped tell through jewellery 💎, and his vision for the future.

💡 From Retail to Independence: The Birth of Marlow Design
What inspired you to transition from a successful retail career to founding Marlow Design in 2014?
Marlow: Throughout my retail career, especially in jewellery, I focused on meeting my clients’ unique needs rather than just selling a product. But retail often limits creativity—you’re working with pre-made items. I wanted to create a space where I could truly serve my clients by crafting jewellery that told their stories 📖. That’s what inspired me to go independent and launch Marlow Design, initially as Marlow’s Diamond & Design, focusing on custom creations and personalization.

📈 A Journey of Growth: Marlow Design Through the Years
How has Marlow Design evolved over the past decade?
Marlow: Early on, I realized that this company was more than just about me. It was about celebrating our clients’ moments through their jewellery 💍. That’s when we rebranded to Marlow Design with the tagline, “Wear Your Special Moments.” Now, the name represents a conduit for our clients’ visions rather than just a style or product.

🎯 Key Milestones and Defining Moments
What were some pivotal moments that shaped the direction of your business?
Marlow: Two moments stand out.

1️⃣ Bringing on Yousaf Ayoubi as our Operations Manager 🤝—he streamlined our behind-the-scenes work, allowing us to focus entirely on our clients.
2️⃣ Hiring Kat MacLean as Lead Designer 🎨—she brought a deep understanding of design and bench craftsmanship, elevating our creations.

Together, they’ve helped the business grow more in two years than in the previous eight 🚀.

🏆 Cherished Accomplishments Over the Decade
What accomplishments over the past ten years are you most proud of?
Marlow: One of the greatest honours is hearing clients say, “You helped my mother, brother, or cousin.” Being trusted by entire families is a humbling experience ❤️.

Also, thriving through COVID was a major accomplishment. When people were more mindful about where they spent their money, their continued belief in us was something I’ll never forget 🙏.

💖 The Power of Custom Jewellery: A Story to Remember
Can you share about a custom piece that holds special significance?
Marlow: One that always comes to mind is for a client whose fiancée passed away a week before their wedding 😢. We crafted a yellow gold ring with her ashes sealed inside. Knowing he could carry her memory with him everywhere brought him immense comfort.

It was deeply emotional and reminded me why we do what we do 💫.

Love of Family: The Heart of It All
Family is everything to Jenn Givlin and Dan Givlin. From their early days as high school sweethearts to raising three incredible children, family has always been at the center of their world. They’ve built a strong, supportive, and loving foundation that has carried them through the years.

Their three children, all of whom are now adults, continue to make them proud. Darren, 27, has made waves as the Manager of Pickleball YYC, sharing his love for the sport with Calgary’s growing pickleball community. Ben, 29, oversees Concierge Services at the University of Wilfrid Laurier, while his twin sister, Victoria, also 29, works alongside Jenn as the Co-Publisher along with in the Film Industry as an Actress, Director and Producer. Together, the Givlin siblings have continued to forge their own paths while following their heart.

But the Givlin family’s love doesn’t stop with their three children. Thinking about the next generation, James (5) and Arielle (8) are their grandchildren. Their hearts are full as they watch their children raise their own families, and the bonds they share with their grandkids are truly special. From spending time together outdoors to cherishing family gatherings, the Givlins find joy in every moment spent with the younger generation.

Giving Back: Love for Community
The Givlin family’s love for Bearspaw is evident in their dedication to giving back. Last year, Jenn and Victoria led the charge in raising $2,500 for the Pancreatic Cancer and Kidney Research Society, a cause close to their hearts. Their commitment to making a difference speaks to their belief that true love is not only about receiving but also about sharing with others.

They understand that love thrives in spaces where people work together, support one another, and show kindness and compassion.

The Love Story: High School Sweethearts Still Going Strong
Jenn and Dan’s love story is a true testament to the enduring power of love. Having met before high school, their bond has only deepened over the years. Together, they’ve built a life full of shared memories, raising three amazing children and growing their family in a way that mirrors the love they share for each other. The foundation of their relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and a deep sense of partnership that continues to strengthen.

Their relationship is a perfect example of how love can endure and evolve over time, growing stronger with each new chapter. As they’ve navigated the ups and downs of life, they’ve done so side by side, always lifting each other up and supporting their children in their journeys as well.

As the end of the year approaches, it’s time to review your finances and optimize tax savings, maximize savings, and prepare for a more prosperous year ahead. There are several specific financial strategies that can make a big difference. Here are essential tips to consider:

Plan for Next Year’s Financial Goals
Set clear financial goals! Whether it’s saving for a down payment, paying off debt, or building an emergency fund, having a plan will help you stay focused. Review expenses, create a budget, set up automatic contributions to savings, and review all assets and liabilities.

Maximize Your RRSP Contributions
Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) are a critical tax-saving tool. Contributions to an RRSP are tax-deductible, and your investments grow tax-free until you withdraw them in retirement. You have until March 1, 2025, to contribute for the 2024 tax year. The contribution limit for 2024 is 18% of your earned income from the previous year, up to a maximum of $32,560. Review your available contribution room on your CRA account.

Take Advantage of a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)
A TFSA is a versatile savings tool where contributions, growth, and withdrawals are tax-free. The 2024 TFSA contribution limit is $7,000, and if you haven’t maxed out contributions from previous years, you can carry forward unused room.

In Canada, there’s no gift tax, so you can transfer assets or funds without immediate tax implications, which could be a way to assist family members financially.

Charitable Donations for Tax Deductions
If you’re considering supporting a charitable cause, year-end is a great time to do so. Charitable donations to registered Canadian charities are eligible for a tax credit. You’ll receive a federal tax credit of 15% on the first $200 donated and 29% on amounts above that (or 33%, to the extent that your income exceeds $246,752). Provinces also offer additional credits, which vary by region, making this a smart way to reduce your taxable liability while supporting a good cause.

Review Your Retirement Plan and Income Splitting Opportunities
If you’re nearing retirement or already retired, the end of the year is a good time to review your retirement income strategy. Canadians can take advantage of income splitting to lower their household tax burden. Seniors over the age of 65 can split up to 50% of eligible pension income (including RRIF withdrawals) with their spouse or common-law partner, potentially saving on taxes by shifting income to the lower-income spouse to reduce the chance of getting clawed back on Old Age Security.
