Today is finally the day! The Bearspaw Lions Club is proud to present the first Outdoor Farmers Market of the season.

The market is located at 25240 Nagway Rd and will be open from 10 AM - 2 PM. Come on down and grab all your fresh produce, an early gift for dad, or some gorgeous flowers for your table. So many makers, producers and other culinary masters will be there to help you with what ever your needs will be.

The 2024 season will run every Sunday from June 2th - October 6th 10 AM - 2 PM.

I have news to share with you all. I’m writing to let you know about my medical situation and this is a difficult letter to write. Some of you may already know that I have a hereditary kidney disease which I’ve had for many years. My kidney function is now at 19%, which is way below normal. I’ve been doing as much as I can to slow the progression by seeing a doctor regularly, following a kidney diet and taking medication. But my doctor tells me that eventually my kidneys will stop working and that getting a transplant from a live donor is my best bet. I have been told to try to find someone who may be willing to donate a kidney to me, so I am getting the word out in case someone may consider coming forward as a potential donor. With a live donor transplant I can avoid dialysis, a life-sustaining treatment, and avoid a long wait on the deceased donor waitlist. Also, my doctors says that transplants from living donors typically last longer than transplants from a deceased donor.

I want to be clear that I would only want a donor who does not feel any pressure to donate. If the idea of donation is not comfortable for you, I understand and respect that, and it won’t affect our relationship in any way. I know this is a very personal decision and there is a lot to consider.

I’ve learned that kidney donors can live a normal and healthy life with just one kidney, and donors don’t have to be related or be the same blood type to donate. Donors are carefully screened to make sure it is safe for them to donate, and it is all done privately, by a separate donor team. It will all be confidential, and I will not know anything, unless the donor chooses to tell me.

I’m trying to spread the word so if you could help share my story I would be very grateful If you would like to learn more about living donation, you can get more information from the donor nurse coordinator at St. Paul’s Hospital (604 806 9027/ 1-877-922-9822; [email protected]) or Vancouver General Hospital (ph: 604 875-5182/1-855-875-5182; [email protected]) or on the BC Transplant website (www.transplant.bc.ca).

All information is private and confidential and any potential donor can make the choice to back
away from the process at any point.
