June 21st each year is National Indigenous Persons Day. As we reflect on the last year we share this program reflecting on "The Apology".
https://youtu.be/1qOI61apUDs
The words Indigenous, Inuit, and Metis people have been waiting to hear for so long in this country: “I am very sorry.”
The apology was delivered in a statement from the Pope in 2022, heard worldwide after a week-long visit by a delegation of residential school survivors, elders, and chiefs.
The historic moment comes nearly a year after the first discovery of unmarked graves across former sites of residential schools.
It was a stark reminder of the atrocities committed by the church - stripping children away from their homes, cultures, and languages - where too often, they faced abuse by the very priests and nuns who were supposed to care for them.
This week on Context: The apology - a step towards healing and reconciliation.

Supreme Court of Canada upholds Safe Third Country Agreement
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden agreed to expand the treaty in March so that it would apply along all 8,900 kilometres of the shared border, not just at official crossings.
Before then, a loophole allowed asylum seekers who arrived between official points of entry along the land border to make claims in Canada despite having arrived in the U.S. first.
Canada's highest court has deemed the pact between Canada and the United States to control the flow of asylum seekers across the shared border to be constitutional.
