If you chase Steelhead long enough, you may come to realize that just walking down a lovely trail to a favourite pool, a pool filled with memories, is such a wonderful part of the day. Add a dog and feed off their energy and the pure joy of living, even better. A fish or two is OK, but not nearly as important as it once was.

I love living in British Columbia and the only downside is that it cost a lot to mail things in Canada. So I'm doing all my U.S. and European Shipping out of Bozeman, Mt. this coming week. So if anyone wants to order my 2025 Fly Fishing Dreams Calendar now is the time to do it. It's a large format (12" x 24") calendar that is crammed full of info; the people, the places, the fly patterns and the passion of our sport and this is the 35th edition. The prices include shipping. For one it's $18, for 5 or more they are only $9 each, for fly shops $8 each, for clubs and conservation groups they are $7 each and for any young kid I run into who loves fly fishing and has no money, they are free. For orders, drop me an E-Mail at: [email protected].

This past week I was fishing with my buddy Randall Kaufmann in Idaho and our old friend Mike Lawson suggested a few rivers we hadn't fished in decades. It was the most incredible Cutthroat Fishing I've ever experienced and our fish never missed a breath. Keeping them wet...

I've never been much a fan of sink tip lines. I found them to have lots of hinging and not much fun to cast. But this spring Gareth Jones, the genius Line Designer and Master Angler from AirFlo sent me one of their "Mini Tips" this past spring here in B.C. and it was an eye opener for me. At first I thought I got the wrong line as it looked and cast just like a floating and I pulled it in to read the micro printed ID Stuff just behind the front loop. Then I fished the hell out it all spring on our wonderful trout lakes. In comparison to my usual floating line, long leaders and heavily weight flies style, it was a joy to cast and use smaller flies and a shorter 7-8' leader. The olive color is also perfect as it looks just like the weedbeds and the secret sauce they put in their line coatings really cuts down the line bunching when I'm shooting it of the floor of my boats. Putting flies down in the 6 to 15' Chomp Zone just got a whole lot easier.

Here's one from the vaults taken by Randall Kaufmann from one of our helicopter camping trips into the Rangitaiki River on the North Island of New Zealand. I loved to fly in there in the Dec. 20-30 window and we would have it all to ourselves. I would rate it as in the top 5 trout rivers in the world. It was like fun on steroids.

If you are wandering around the the big freestone rivers in Montana or Idaho or here in B.C. in the early summer, it's good to have some Salmon Fly Patterns with you and I like tying Mike Lawson's version of it. It is so aerodynamic and casts like a bullet. It's also become my favourite dry on the little Summer Run Rivers on the West Coast of Vancouver Island for this same reason.

The Lake Fishing here in B.C. is just starting to get going with warming spring and with it comes a war in my head whether to fish or to quietly sneak around the Bullrushes to photograph the nesting birds.
