A gorgeous portrait B&W capture taken at a studio in Lemington. Over time it had yellowed and developed a few scratches. With some love and life, we gave this image a refresh.

It’s a touch up Tuesday. 🎨

Did you know this was a B&W produced photo when it was first developed and then it was hand coloured ? I have a special place in my heart for these images because they resemble photographic paintings. Imagine if you had to go through that process just to get that portrait of you and your loved one?

I scanned the original of this photo and restored the markings and blemishes to get that work of art back. 🥰

Our photos and memories deserve care and attention so they can be preserved for future generations.

QUICK TIP: Make sure your photos are not stored on the floor of your basement. In chance of flood if they are elevated, they are less likely to have damage.

On older printed photographs, sometimes there is a story to be told on the backs of them. It's like flipping over a leaf to find new markings.

One of our customers was unsure as to which time frame these studio photos had been taken of her ancestors. But we noticed the "POST CARD" markings on the back and were curious if they would give us some answers.

Here is what we found out...
-These photos are called Real Photo Postcards (RPPC)
-They were often developed on the spot and captured with very high-quality lenses which make them ideal candidates for digitizing and enlarging
-On March 1, 1907 there was a federal legislation passed that allowed senders to write messages on the back of the cards they sent
-The stamp box in the top right corner helps us to identify the paper manufacturer and pin point the date range where it may have been produced!
-The first image below was NOKO paper (produced between 1907-1920)
-The second image below was AZO paper (produced between 1926-1940) (Notice this image also has a spot for correspondence and address which was made available after the legislation was passed)

I loved discovering these answers for my customer and helping to fill in some of those blanks!

This photo was of my lovely customer’s mother and was printed in 1933. The photo had been scratched with little to none of her face preserved. With a little help from a few other reference images, I was able to restore this portrait to a forever memory for her daughter.

A quick little shoutout to let you all know that UNBOXED is on a bit of a pause. I have the incredible opportunity of being in Ireland at the moment, and work through the rest of my Work/Holiday Visa. I didn't know this chance would even present itself, and I am so thankful that it did.

I am still working behind the scenes to UNBOX ideas and plans for the future of UNBOXED. I encourage you to please keep in touch if you have an upcoming project.

Live behind the scenes at UNBOXED.

This customer is doing a combination of batch scanning (scanning photos digitally to archive them) and photo restoration. This project is 500 photo scans and 5 for restoration.

Every print I am scanning was a moment captured and I feel so fortunate to help preserve these moments for years to come!

Here is a little something for WORK SAMPLE WEDNESDAY.

This is a photograph that I restored to it's original B&W beauty. The photo had yellowed and developed a discoloured film from being in a matted frame over time. It needed a little bit of love to bring back the bright faces and smiles.

Here are examples of what treatments can be done to restore your memories: colour correction, B&W or Sepia conversion, red eye repair, retouching of scratches-rips-tears, ink leaks, bends etc.

Happy Dad's Day to all the fantastic men out there. Celebrating the wonderful Dads that are, were and will forever steal our hearts.

What is great about photos is that each carry a story. This year for father's day, I decided to take my dad on a trip down memory lane. This first photo was taken at our annual golf tournament him and I used to play in called 'THE CANDY CUP'. I remember every year, he would pull out his light pink blazer for our reception after golfing.

Every week, I will be posting a sample of a restoration project...

This particular photo is dear to my heart as it is a portrait of my beautiful Grandmother Alice. She was the heart beat of our entire family and would always shine bright every time I saw her.

On the left, you can see this was the original portrait of her. This photo was hanging in her house for years before she passed. Due to light exposure and moisture the photograph was faded and stuck to the glass of the frame. This is what caused the small tear in the bottom right corner. I was able to scan the photograph and spent time restoring it to it's former glory; thus bringing her shine back.

Such a nice feeling to bring this precious memory back to life and now share it with the rest of our family.
