The Book and Periodical Council's Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed to them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Freedom to Read Week is organized by the Freedom of Expression Committee of the Book and Periodical Council, the umbrella organization for Canadian associations

that are or whose members are primarily involved with the writing, editing, translating, publishing, producing, distributing, lending, marketing, reading and selling of written words.

À l'avenir, quatre organisations influentes - Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, le Conseil des bibliothèques urbaines du Canada, l'Ontario Library Association et le Book and Periodical Council - continueront de collaborer pour renforcer la mission de la campagne et favoriser une croissance continue. 🙌

We may find materials in libraries we don’t agree with, and that’s OK. But asking for those materials to be removed limits everyone’s ability to choose for themselves what they should read, and that’s not OK! 📚

As Canadians, we should celebrate our right to intellectual freedom, including the right to read what we want.

The Cochrane Public Library endorses the Canadian Federation of Library Associations Statement on Intellectual Freedom and Libraries. CPL provides, defends and promotes equitable access to the widest possible variety of expressive content.
