Milton Friedman, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, participated in numerous debates defending free-market capitalism. In a famous debate with Phil Donahue in the 1970s, Friedman argued, “The society that puts equality before freedom will end up with neither. The society that puts freedom before equality will end up with a great measure of both.”
