"The greatest difference between my younger self and me is that life has given me time. Time to know that closure is an illusion. We don’t ever get over the greatest tragedies in life. We just soak them up and learn to live with them as if they were parts of the body."

When Heathens Pray, Dr. Bryan Keitsemang

Blurb:

In this coming-of-age story, Bryan Keitsemang, an anxious, ambitious teenager navigating the treacherous political landscape of secondary school with a carefully-crafted public image, transforms into a self-possessed survivor capable of responding to prejudice. He writes about overcoming a complicated past and navigating the tumultuous waters of identity, sexuality, politics, and faith.

This book is an unflinchingly honest examination of the path Keitsemang took to get through the darkest times of his life, discovering purpose in the mess, letting go of shame, and finding acceptance. With heartfelt reflections, he explores the liberation found in living authentically and the courage required to rediscover one's own face before the world put a mask over it.

✍️ Pearl Letlakala

The WeekendPost describes Dr Bryan Keitsemang's eagerly awaited memoir, When Heathens Pray, as “a story as raw as it is profound,” highlighting his signature openness.

In an interview, Dr. Keitsemang shared insights into growing up gay and atheist in conservative Botswana, confronting trauma, and showing his face in a society determined to cover it up with a mask. This fearless memoir challenges societal, political, cultural and sexual taboos, and champions inclusivity.

As a scholar of Politics and International Relations, Dr. Keitsemang underscored the urgency of q***r literature stating that,
"It is the duty of our democracy to protect all vulnerable groups from the oppression of the majority. Delaying discussions on inclusivity perpetuates harm, normalizes discrimination, and conveys a dangerous message: that some lives and struggles are less deserving of acknowledgment."

When Heathens Pray is set for release on February 27, 2025.

"I wanted to write a book I longed for as a teenager - a guide on identity, addressing the fears I once held growing up in a culturally conservative and religious society that perpetuated heteronormativity. Unaware of what awaited, I spent years thinking my future held nothing apart from a life of imitation. Now, having engaged with young individuals nationwide who've read my work, I recognize the shared struggles. While progress has been made, many still question their place and if anyone cares. 'Matters of the Heart' was my way of saying 'yes, you do belong." Dr. Bryan Keitsemang, author of Matters of the Heart (Available now on Amazon).
