Bhutan Lectures in Innovation Science and Society

Why BLISS?

As a small landlocked country between two of the most populous nations on our planet, Bhutan faces many economic, social and environmental challenges. As of 2016, an estimated 50% of Bhutan’s population was under the age of 25. As these youngsters mature, Bhutan will continue to witness increasing pressure to provide jobs and life satisfaction. The hydropower sector while seeing steady growth and contributing significantly to the country’s exchequer, fails to create substantial jobs and employment. Agriculture, which provides direct employment to 58 percent of Bhutanese, remains under developed and has not witnessed much innovation over the last few decades.

Urban centers such as Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing are considered some of the fastest growth urban areas in Asia. However, the lack of planning and coordination is apparent in the haphazard manner in which drains and electricity connections are being provided in these hubs. Supplies of basic amenities such as water still remain a challenge. And energy consumption to heat houses during winter months peak due to poor design and almost non- existent insulation.
