The gho had been given as a soelra by His Majesty, the Second King to one of his Changkaps who was married to a lady from Toebissa. When the Changkap retired in the 60s, he and his wife settled in Tashigang Goenpa, for a more aesthetic retired life. Since they did not have any children they decided to sell the gho along with some other soelra items.

This particular gho that I am wearing for you, was purchased by my father, Late Kinlay Wangdi from Babessa who had been a very good friend and a neighbor of the Changkap in Tashigang Goenpa. Mr. Kinlay Wangdi purchased the gho for 1200 patis (1600 kg) of de husked rice which took him 3 years to pay off. My older brother Bap Kinga remembers going with bags of rice on horseback once every year to Tashigang Goenpa to pay off the 400 patis of rice every year. When the Late Kinlay Wangdi my father passed away in 2016 at the age of 95 he left the gho for his eldest son, Bap Kinga.

Since the gho belonged to the Second King, it was really large. My father had to get it altered so that it could fit us. The inner lining of the royal gho itself was so special and thick that they made a separate gho out of it. This only goes to show how generous our Royal family are in ensuring that those who serve them were privileged throughout their generations – yes even for those who did not have children, they too were blessed to receive royal gifts that ensured they lived comfortably during their retirement years.

Kinga Tshering is the founder of the Institute of Happiness and the youngest son of the Late Kinlay Wangdi.

Auo Kinga is wearing a beautiful raw silk 11-legged hor patterned, mentshi matha gho, from what I have been told the longer hor patterns in this particular gho is supposed to exude and emulate the regalness and valour of a sword.

I have now taken it upon myself to trace the changkap’s name and family since they did have any children to share their complete story. However, I did manage to get hold of Aou Kinga Tshering who is a very good family friend, with whom I have had the honour of collaborating with my work ‘Bhutan Street Fashion’ in his Harvard Trek program with the students. I have been requesting and coaxing him to feature his family heirloom textiles on my blog, for like forever now and today he finally caved in to my request.

We made an unofficial detour to Khebeythang, to an infrastructure which is abandoned for last few decades in complete solitude. It was actually constructed for the Nature Study Centre through the funding support of one of the donors (don’t want to name it). It is around one and half hour walk from the main road point from the end of Phobjikha Village (don’t remember the name exactly). Completely in the middle of the dense forest and no sign of any settlemet around.

However, the place is good, peaceful and calm. There is an opportunity for ecotourism activities such as recreational fishing, biking and nature trails around these places. We must revive these infrastructures as soon as possible to our advantage.

A lady asks: "How much do you sell your eggs for?"

The old vendor replies "50¢ an egg, madam.” The lady says, “I'll take 6 eggs for $2.50 or I'm leaving.”

The old salesman replies “Buy them at the price you want, Madam. This is a good start for me because I haven't sold a single egg today and I need this to live.”

She bought her eggs at a bargain price and left with the feeling that she had won.

She got into her fancy car and went to a fancy restaurant with her friend. She and her friend ordered what they wanted. They ate a little and left a lot of what they had asked for.

They paid the bill, which was $150. The ladies gave $200 and told the fancy restaurant owner to keep the change as a tip...

This story might seem quite normal to the owner of the fancy restaurant, but very unfair to the egg seller...

The question it raises is:

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙮?
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆?

I once read this somewhere ,that a father used to buy goods from poor people at high prices, even though he didn't need the things. Sometimes he paid more for them.

I was amazed. One day his son asked him "Why are you doing this Dad?" His father replied: "It's charity wrapped in dignity, son."

I want to challenge each one of us to do better. We can do that.
