Jakar Yugyal Dzong, or popularly known as Jakar Dzong (one of the famous Bumthang attractions), is believed to be constructed by Lam Ngagi Wangchuck (1517 – 1554), a Tibet. Oral legend had it that a white bird once flew away and perched on where the Dzong stands today and a group of Lamas and the elders considered it was a good omen then, they left the old site and moved to the new one at the eastern area of the Bumthang Valley.

According to some sources, the Tibetan military attacked the Dzong thrice. Phuntsho Namgyel, the ruler of Tsang in Tibet, twice sent an army to destroy Zhabdrung in the 17th century but was defeated. The third subjugation concurred under the dynasty of the 3rd Desi, Minjur Tempa. It was believed as a difficult battle that was only won with the arrival forces of Lam Ngawang Rabten. After the victory, the Dzong, we know today, was renamed as’Jakar Yugyal Dzong’ and in English, it means ‘ the Victorious Fortress of the White Bird’.

Losar Tashidelek🙌

The word Losar literally means “new year”. It is derived from two Tibetan words, “lo” meaning year and “sar” meaning new. This New Year is largely observed throughout Bhutan, where it is also referred to as Dawa Dangpa Losar, or New Year of the Bhutan. The establishment of the Dawa Dangpa Losar (New year) has close connections with the use of the Tibetan calendar. It usually falls when the new harvest season cycle begins or when the winter season is completed. In rural areas, people get up every early on the New Year’s Day, take a bath, dress in new clothes, and make some offerings at the household shrines to start the family praying ceremony. It is a very important annual event for families and the community, giving everyone the chance to come together to enjoy one another’s company, play traditional games and sports such as archery and Khuru and also enjoy delicious foods and drinks. Some dress up in new clothes and go to the monasteries to offer prayers.

Trashigang Dzong ("The Fortress of the Auspicious Hill") is one of the largest dzong fortresses in Bhutan, located in Trashigang District of Bhutan. The fortress was built in 1659 atop a ledge with steep cliffs on three sides, overlooking the Drangme Chhu and Gamri Chhu rivers. The construction of the dzong was prophesied by Ngawang Namgyal who ordered the Penlop (Governor) of Trongsa, Chhogyal Minjur Tempa to put down local chieftains and construct the dzong. According to legend, the sight of the Dzong scared the Tibetan army which retreated while remarking that the Dzong was a "Sky Dzong and was not on the ground". The dzong was further expanded by Gyalsey Tenzin Rabgye between 1680 and 1694 and by Dzongpon Dopola in 1936. The dzong was consecrated and named as Trashigang by Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje.
