Firstly, the Olive Tree Bible app is interested in licensing The Hip-Hop Gospel (an opportunity to get it, literally, into the hands of millions) and they asked for an audio recording which leads me to the second bit of good news...

Calling all Bermuda peeps!

Can you rap, sing, or beatbox or wanna learn?

Do you love to perform?

Join internationally renowned writer and beatboxer Rev Gav for rehearsals of The Hip-Hop Gospel. No agenda. No fees. Just seeing where God leads us. We'll do some rapping, some beatboxing, and journey together through this amazing gospel text.

This project is open to people of all ages and backgrounds - adults and young people, male and female.

Rehearsals will be on Sundays from 2pm - 4pm @ St. Mark's Church, kicking off on 12th September.

The oven of love gave up its bun
And Lizzy gave birth to a baby son

Because of God’s power being allowed to flower
Her friends and good buddies threw a baby shower

And as with the custom of Jewish guys
On the eighth day they were going to circumcise

To appellate and designate a tag and a title
"We’ll call him Zechariah cos we think it is vital"

But to their surprise, they had to revise
"No! John is his name," Lizzy had to advise

"But you’ve got to be kidding?" asked the party crowd
"Only family names should be allowed"

So they waved to the dad to put them straight
To relate, indicate, with a chalk and a slate

They were shocked at the block that he wrote upon
Big Zee spelled out, "His name is John!"

“You complete and utter clutz!
Cos tonight you’re gonna peg it,

And all the stuff you hoarded,
self-rewarded, tell me straight

So this is how it plays
for those that wrap a tight wad
Storing riches for themselves
but aren’t rich towards God

"I first used Gavin’s work way back, with the Beatbox Nativity video, and somehow managed to pick up many chapters of Luke’s gospel in their original format. This year I wanted to use the Beatbox Passion, which I’d also picked up as a video back in the day, for a sermon on “Resurrection”, and seeing that I didn’t have the whole gospel got in touch to see if the rest of Luke had been “translated”. Answer? “Yes!”

The result is great! The text is in proper drama script style divided into the different members of the cast where necessary, the emphasized syllables are underlined, so performance is made easier, and the parts for cast members are already highlighted. Simply gather your hip-hoppers, print out, and go.

The only comments after the Beatbox Passion that I heard were positive, and the age range was 50-something grandparents to the 80-plus widow of a minister (who was the most enthusiastic, as it happens).

I’ll be using Gavin’s work in future, although it’s not an “every-week” kind of content."
