Authors, listen 📣

If there's no conflict ,there's no story... 🛑

Which translates into there being no need for readers to keep turning pages in your book... 🙅‍♀️

This is a graphic I created to demonstrate the typical story arc.

A story arc is your character's journey, from Page 1 to The End.

Here's the breakdown ⬇

▶ Status Quo: Normal, every day life. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Inciting Incident: Something unexpected happens that thrusts your character into an unfamiliar circumstance.

▶ Self-discovery through experience: Now, your character starts the journey in an attempt to reclaim the status quo (or so they think)/

▶ Obstacles: Here's the conflict! The journey can't be an easy one. Throw everything (including the kitchen sink) at them!

▶ Realization: As a result of overcoming all those trials, they realize something new about life.

▶ (New) Status quo: Your character now proceeds with a new perspective.

I've published more than 20 romance novels and created 3x as many characters, and NEVER ONCE have any of my intimate scenes been the same.

How is that even possible?

First of all, I treat my characters as dynamic, nuanced beings, which means they each have different wants, needs and desires (motivations—I could go on for DAYS about character and character development, by the way. It's my passion!).

While the conflict may be similar (after all, the basic romance formula = Character A wants Character B but 'X' is standing in the way) the way in which I approach said conflict is always different due to my ability to be creative.

How can we, as writers, be more creative? Try applying these 4 techniques:

✏ Read widely: Reading can inspire you and expose you to new ideas and writing styles. And don't just read books in your genre. Read books and articles in different genres, subjects, and formats to expand your horizons.

✏ Listen to music. This is a go-to for me, especially if I'm writing a specific scene. For example, when writing fast-paced action scenes, I'll listen to rap or rock music. When writing steamy scenes, R&B is the way to go!

✏ Collaborate: Working with other writers or artists can spark new ideas and perspectives. Join a writing group, attend workshops, or collaborate with other creatives to enhance your writing skills and creativity. A writing coach may even be able to help jump-start your creative writing process.

✏ Embrace your quirks: Don't be afraid to embrace your quirks and unique perspective. Your experiences and personality can add a distinctive flavor to your writing.
