Winner of the photo contest "Nature"

I'm very happy and proud to share with you that my photo - "Nikola Tesla's dream" - won second place in the photo contest "Nature" organized by the Center of Plant Systems Biology and Biotechnology - CPSBB at the end of the summer. The contest is part of this year's European Night of Scientists. You can see the whole program of the event here:
https://cpsbb.eu/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/programme-2021.pdf

The photo "Nikola Tesla's Dream" is the first lightning I managed to shoot and for me it has sentimental value! And to this day every timethere's a thunderstorm outside, I grab the camera and stand at my window - in exactly the same way as when I shot the first one. Sometimes I joke that I'm a lightning hunter.
I have always admiredthe amount of energy that nature provides us with, and the fact that NikolaTesla managed to capture it and put it to use makes me think we can live in symbiosis with nature and soften our ego as a species. I do hope that this is our future!

Known as Serdica in Antiquity and Sredets in the Middle Ages, Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. Read more about the history of the city and see the video we made with Jivko Konstantinov about the architect who built most of the emblematic buildings in the capital in my new blog post.

Happy holiday to the people of Sofia and the city! 🏛

Known as Serdica in Antiquity and Sredets in the Middle Ages, Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. In 809 Serdica was incorporated into the Bulgarian Empire by Khan Krum and became known as Sredets. In 1018, the Byzantines ended Bulgarian rule until 1194, when it was

Although a week late, I am extremely happy to share with you that the photos of the Waterfall near Kostenets, which I took earlier this year, are part of the interactive map of Bulgaria 🇧🇬, made after the photo contest "Favorite places on the map of Bulgaria" organized by Esri Bulgaria, Photopavilion and National Geographic Bulgaria. You can view the map in my new blog post.

Within a month, amateur and professional photographers had the opportunity to touch the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology and present their original shots of beautiful Bulgaria in the photo contest "Favorite places on the map of Bulgaria" organized by Esri Bulgaria, Photopavilion and N...

Northeast of the village of Sinemorets is the rocky area "The Ships". The name of this magical place comes from two large rocks in the sea, which look like real ancient ships. There is not much information about when and how the rock formations were formed.

According to local legends, pirates have raged in the area. It was here in "The Ships" area that the pirates lit a fire on the high rocks. In this way, they imitated the lights of a lighthouse, which confused and enticed merchant ships to crash into the rocks so that they could more easily plunder them.

The year is 1950 and the world is divided. In Europe the Cold War is in it’s beginning. The struggle between the Eastern bloc, led by the Soviet Union, and the Western bloc, dominated by the United States and NATO is rising. On the other side of the world, like an echo of the Cold War, on June 25th, troops and T-34 tanks of the North Korean People's Army cross the 38th parallel into South Korea and so the Korean war begins. During that time, then called People's Republic of Bulgaria is part of the Eastern bloc for 4 years now. Being under the Soviet Union political influence, many Bulgarians find them selfs involved in the Korean War to help North Korea. An interesting fact, for which there are almost no traces in the national archives, is that, during the Korean War, there is also a Bulgarian trace south of the 38th parallel. In the first 3 months of the war, the North Korean People’s Army pushed back U.N. forces to the 230 kilometer line near the southeastern tip of Korea, known as the "Busan Perimeter". This is why the Americans needed any help posibble, including Bulgarians who wanted American citizenship at the time. An important condition to get one was to be part of a legion figthing in the Korean War on Americas side. Read more about the Bulgarian trace in the Korean war in my new article.

"Whoever controls the media,
controls the mind" - Jim Morrison

Since 1968, May 7 has been celebrated as International Radio and Television Day and is a professional holiday for those working in these institutions. Today, 117 years later, in the modern information society, the mass media is beginning to play an increasingly important role in the life of the society. They affect not only its psyche but also its value system. It's a fact that every day the medias are "flooding" us with all kinds of divergent, diverse and often unnecessary information. Thus, our ability to have critical thinking and reasoning on issues that are urgent for the whole society becomes more and more necessary, but also more and more difficult. The media constantly moves our attention from topic to topic, without giving us the opportunity to analyze or evaluate what is happening in an adequate way. And although the enhanced persuasive communication, often inclining even to manipulation, which the media uses to please their own or other people's interests, more and more of the people "wakes up" and realizes that WE determine the direction that it depends only on US in what future will we and future generations live. And perhaps the most important awareness - everything is changing, slowly, surely, and before our eyes.

The growing gap between the rich and the poor, ruling and ruled, mass protests around the world against the established status quo of a handful of people, even the arrested Julian Assange are clear signs of the path of change. It is in this way, that is important, that the medias in Bulgaria find their balance, stop serving someone's interests, remain objective and enter into their role of real mediators between society and government in order to continue to exist.

Congratulations dear colleagues!

Courage Day begins to be celebrated by the Bulgarian Army as soon as it was established. By decree №1 of January 1, 1880, Alexander Battenberg established the Military Order of Courage, similar to the Russian Saint George, which honors the accomplished deeds on the battlefield. And by decree №5 of January 9 that year the celebration of the holiday was decreed. The date is April 23, the day of St. George the Victorious, and since 1916, due to the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church decides to celebrate the holiday on May 6.

Happy holiday everyone!

“It's about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy.” shares photographer Elliott Erwitt

April 30, 2020 - Buddha's Birthday in South Korea

Every spring, millions of people across South Korea come together to celebrate the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. The entire country is illuminated with colorful lanterns that symbolically convey the wisdom and compassion of the sage, while temples hold cultural performances and spectacular parades.

"Seokga Tansinil", meaning "Buddha’s Birthday" in Korean or "Bucheonim osin nal" (the day when the Buddha came) has been widely observed in many Asian nations for centuries. Due to differences in historical records, different countries celebrate the holiday on different days, but in South Korea, it falls on the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar.

This year, because of COVID-19 the prayer service in all temples across South Korea are for overcoming the pandemic.
