I’ve just started listening to this and I usually don’t post when something “significant” (for want if a much better word) happens because I feel it loses it’s authenticity in the social media world 🤳 it’s all about likes and the “algorithm” 🙄 it’s a catch 22 for someone who wants to share things that might help others but doesn’t know how to maintain integrity to do so! Anyway, that’s something I have to navigate but I just wanted to post something with regards to Matthew Perrys passing 🕊️

I saw some comments that mocked him and questioned the validity of people’s condolences because he was a “Hollywood Millionaire” and it pi**ed me off to be honest. I could speak on it for days but bottom line is, what clearer example would you need that all the things we apparently strive for such as money 💰 and success 📺 could not rid him of his demons?

I know his exact cause of death hasn’t been established but he was very open about his struggles with addiction and this man had all the money to seek professional support, and he did. He had all the adoration of millions of people, he was a successful actor… yet he couldn’t conquer those demons 💭 and always “felt alone”

What chance has the average person got who’s battling addiction when they don’t have the success, the money or the support of others? It’s heartbreaking and something very personal to me because I am an addict…. Something I’ve kept very private and battled for a number of years; but I’ve also grown up around addiction, I’ve seen it first hand, up close, I understand it and watched it change people I love ❤️

The point of this post is a) to highlight how devastating, how subtle, how suffocating addiction can be and how it robs millions of people every day of the freedom they long for 🙏 and to remind people it isn’t the substances that are THE problem 💊💉 🥃 addiction is a desire to escape PAIN, by whatever means. It just so happens that drugs and alcohol hit that bit deeper, numbness, offer that temporary relief but we can become, and are, addicted to TV, shopping, food, p**n, social media and so on and
b) to encourage people to have a little more compassion ❤️ nobody wants be an addict

It’s been 22 years since 9/11 and I spent some time this week listening to the phone calls of those trapped in the towers, on the hijacked planes and of the firefighters who entered the towers to save others

This wasn’t morbid curiosity for the sake of it and not my usual choice of content but I was curious as to what people do and say when they feel they might not make it home to loved ones, because ultimately, whatever that is, is what really matters

The calls are heartbreaking and were not easy to listen to, it feels very personal to hear these final moments of someone’s life and every single one was upsetting to hear

I felt I should share some of what those final conversations were to not only honour those who went through unimaginable circumstances (I didn’t expect that to be a motivation beforehand but ‘sharing’ that moment in some way, I felt the least I could was acknowledge them individually, as people, as humans, rather than just names) but to also highlight that each and every person I’ve listened to, tried to contact family members for one reason…. To tell them they loved them ❤️

I think that speaks for itself and is a reminder for me at least that much of the bull 💩 we get caught up in during daily life and what we allow to come between us doesn’t actually matter. If we found ourselves in the same situation I’m sure every single one of us would make the same calls for the same reasons ❤️

ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)

What we experience during childhood can have a significant impact on the rest of our lives. Many of us privately hold this assumption that we should be able to cope as adults and so dismiss the impact our experiences have on us later in life.

Over the coming weeks I’m going to share with you a presentation I put together a while back that explores what ACEs are and what they may mean for you. Research shows we are much more likely to experience health and social issues as an adult if we have a number of ACEs during childhood. Today they may include pandemics, lockdowns, racism, discrimination, bullying, poverty and more.

Understanding exactly what ACEs are and they’re impact allow us find healthy ways to heal and interrupt the cycle than is often experienced through generations. This awareness has had a huge impact on me personally and many people I have worked with. I hope you can join me over the coming weeks.

If you have any specific areas or questions, or you think you or someone else may be interested in live workshops, please get in touch and share the information if needed. Thank you - Joe

Being a parent is easily the most rewarding yet most challenging thing I’ve ever done… I know many can relate to this

Yet we often forget what it felt like to be in that position when we’re playing the role of parent. Our job is to protect and nurture of course but they have the same emotions we do without the life experience 👴🏻

Listening, compassion and then advice if necessary

Someone once told me “they need to know you care before they care what you know … it was professional advice but it felt just as relevant as a parent

We do the best we can do, I’m still learning 🙏
