Postproduction of an opera, live recorded in Luxembourg: 36 Mics on stage and in the hall, 32 wireless mics and 4 Playback-tracks. Recording and mixing live with the Avid S6 and Pyramix makes postproduction very smooth and budget-friendly. Dynamic mix is recorded during the show and automatically applied to the corrections. Finetuning the mix with my s1-remotes is a piece of cake!

As a cellist / producer, this is the kind of production one would normally not even dare to dream of. Recording, producing and mixing this beautiful cello concerto with the one and only Jean-Guihen Queyras and the Luxembourg Philharmonic / Gustavo Gimeno has been such an incredible joy. The first symphony and Métaboles are true masterpieces as well and magnificently played by the Luxembourg Philharmonic. Release on harmonia mundi this Friday, 19th of April!

French breakfast in Berlin. A short 2-day visit to listen and edit a recording together with Lahav Shani. Although this time the visit was very short, it’s still great to feel the vibe again of the city in which I have lived, studied and had so much fun. Thank you, Berlin!
This week I’m at the Roy Thomson Hall producing the next album of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with Gustavo Gimeno. It’s a real pleasure to work with such a wonderful orchestra and conductor!
This production is very special, one I’ll never forget, and not only because it’s an extraordinary piece played by wonderful soloists, orchestra and conductor.
On the 2nd of May our son Julian was born. That was in the very same week the recording of Turangalila took place. I was following the rehearsals and balancing from my studio in Belgium, being together with my wife and son. On the 5th I was leading the patch-session in Toronto remotely from Belgium, talking directly to the stage and to the on-site control room where we had two (grammy-)awarded balance engineers Erdo Groot from Polyhymnia International BV and John Newton from Soundmirror, Inc., taking care of the technical part: microphones, balance and recording, and were able to realise all the wishes and ideas I had in mind concerning balance and sound, while the soloists, orchestra and conductor were performing on a top-level. So grateful now that today, exactly 9 months after the birth of our son, this very special cd is released to the world!

Ik ben dankbaar dat ik deze sonate, die mij zeer na aan het hart is, heb kunnen opnemen. Het filigrein van gevoelens die deze muziek oproept heeft mij al gegrepen vanaf mijn vijftiende en doet dat nog steeds. Deze sonate in g-klein is een van de ontroerendste sonates die ik ken.
Mocht je even pauze willen houden van de dagelijkse bezigheden dan kan ik dit van harte aanbevelen!
